I have many friends who are readily helping their elderly parents - i) because they love them unconditionally and ii) because they want to repay the support their parents gave them when they needed it.
Recently, MiL asked us for a substantial contribution towards her care home costs. It was assumed by her that we would automatically cough up, despite never having been consulted on the issue, and that we would conveniently overlook the fact that she had chosen not to bother about our family over the past 30 years. When we declined she was very indignant and put out. The upshot of all this is that she has ceased to communicate with us, sadly not even bothering to send Christmas cards or birthday cards to her GC and GGC.
We did spell out our reasons to her as to why we did not wish to subsidise her life style and she was consequently placed in a home according to her means. Had she once turned round and said "Yes, I understand why you feel this way, or "I agree it isn't your place to support me now," I think we could have swept things under the carpet, but this indignant response and selfish ignoring our family members has left us baffled. (We did send a Christmas card, birthday card, Mother's day card etc. .... but admittedly not the usual generous presents.)
I've a feeling that because we were always the ones to run round her in the past, putting her needs first, we were expected to continue this ad infinitum. My question really is, will she ever see the light or is that it now? There's no point saying tell her how we feel and what we want to hear from her, it needs to come from her just this once before it's too late.
