as she has been put back on end of life care and was unresponsive. Then my sister in law, whom mum dislikes preferring db's ex fiance from 30 years ago, said 'Hello, Babs' where upon Mum said 'hello dear!' and opened her eyes.

This is exactly what I went through with my mother. Some days I didn't know whether I dared go home as she seemed to be so near the end and then the next day she'd be singing along to Frank Sinatra.
It's so emotionally draining. Hang on in there, kitty
kitty it is the limbo that's the worst part in my opinion. I used to jump every time the phone rang at this stage.
Sorry if I'm being insensitive but it was relief when the call did come.
