We get quite a few cold callers knocking on our front door, which I ignore. Today, however, I slipped up because I thought it was the postman.
There was a young lady, complete with clipboard, wanting to know if I am the homeowner etc and blathering on about roofing in our area. I politely refused to give her any information and she went on her way.
I watched her knock on orher doors and then decided to ring 101 because we have a lot of elderly people round here, whom I suspect could be potential victims of this scam.
Well, 101 took all the details and agreed that it sounded as though it could well be conmen/women, but because so much time had elapsed (5 minutes!!) they wouldn't come out to investigate

The best they could do was alert the local team to see if they were in the area and could see if the coldcallers were still around, but if the local team was not in the area then at least it had been reported and recorded!!! WHAT???
Many years ago, when councils were offering roofing grants, a similar scam happened locally. When I alerted the police they came whizzing round straight away! That time, too, it was a young woman knocking and doing the patter. For some reason, people are more susceptible to being taken in by a woman because they think they're trustworthy!
Sorry for ranting, but I am so angry about this and will be devastated if I hear that someone's been conned out of their savings or robbed
- and, yes, the previous lot were targeting the vulnerable and were coming back to my elderly neighbour at 11.00 PM to do an internal roof inspection!!
