The 'power' of colours

I've thought a lot about the impact of colours over the past couple of weeks. I have landed a job in a school where the children wear beautiful soft yellow jumpers, so bright and cheerful, there is an instant good vibe!

At interview, I wore dark blue - partly because it is a favourite, but also because I remember reading somewhere that it is the colour of 'trust' as in apparent dependability. And blue can make me feel organised and efficient (something has to!)

I have memories of a favourite red dress that made me feel very sensuous and bold.

Do you agree that the colours we wear can have an impact on our own psyche and what colour associations do you have?

Don't know what this says about me,I am always drawn to sludge coloured olive green,I wear Navy and white ,I feel clean and fresh has to be stripes though and I love a white T shirt, spring and autumn colours make me feel happy,I am a Capricorn and an earth sign, and a pretty down to earth person, dependable, loyal and depressingly sensible

I tend towards blues and purples. Not good with browns/oranges etc, but find that I feel more cheery if I'm wearing pink. So why have I only got one pink jumper... confused

Marmight Thu 17-Mar-16 08:43:34

Grey, purple, navy, black, brown and darkish green. Red and pink used to be my fav colours when I had very dark hair but do absolutely nothing for me now. Yellow and pale green make me look dead. I have weaned myself off khaki and sludge wink. I don't particularly care any more whether I look good so long as I feel comfortable 'inside'.

I used to always favour sky blue then had a spell of feeling depressed and went for sludge and/or bronze. Now cheered up again, I like lots of bright colours but not sure they go with my ageing features.
Oh well, who cares!

Bright colours don't really suit me so I tend to go for sludge colours like downtoearth. At least that way I can brighten things up with a scarf.

I`m always told that I suit blues best, but I`m drawn a lot to red and yellow as well, they look so cheerful and bright. Not too keen on brown.

Teetime Thu 17-Mar-16 17:04:41

I am a blues and purple person - not sure if that means I'm mean and moody or dark and sensuous - perhaps both.

ninathenana Thu 17-Mar-16 17:12:13

I wear a whole range of colours. Brown, navy, dark green and at the other end pink, lilac, sky blue, orange, red.
Basically what ever I decided on the day.

NotTooOld Thu 17-Mar-16 17:24:44

I like black, red and pink but feel best in black. It used to be easy when my hair was very dark, I knew I looked good in cherry red, but now I tend to take refuge in black. I wish I didn't really as I think oldies look good in bright colours.

Alima Thu 17-Mar-16 17:28:41

I am nearly always in trousers or jeans and I like a dark bottom half, shades of navy blue or black. I prefer colourful tops, either light or bright. Tend not to like any of the sludge colours. As well as the fact they don't do anything for me they are quite depressing.

Bubbe Thu 17-Mar-16 17:35:18

I'm always drawn to greens but they make me look ill. I've been told that yellow suits me but I don't like it to wear. I know pinks make me look healthy but I don't like wearing it either, except for when I'm going to be spending time with my new granddaughter and I know that the chances are we'll be matching.

I don't think yellow is a good school uniform colour as its very attractive to wasps and bees when the children are outside ~ which I would hope would be lots and lots of the time.

Having said that, as a retired primary school teacher, I know that yellow is an excellent colour to decorate part of the class as its stimulating without being over-exciting!

NotTooOld Thu 17-Mar-16 17:36:02

I'm the same, Alima, wear jeans or jeggings mostly. I've had a very depressing morning searching local shops for jeans as I've realised I've gone up a size. shock. I thought all my old jeans had shrunk but sadly it's me that's got bigger.

NotTooOld Thu 17-Mar-16 17:39:36

I like yellow, too, Bubbe but it's only banana yellow that suits me. I went in a shop called Whitestuff this morning. It's quite expensive (well, I thought so) but they have lovely, colourful clothes. Oh, yes, I bought a white t-shirt!

I am definitely a blue person. I dont know why.
According to a colour book, I should be wearing mustard. No thanks.

Greyduster Thu 17-Mar-16 18:48:09

I'm fond of dark red, rust (appropriately!), grey and various shades of blue. I've only once bought anything green and then I regretted it. I'm not comfortable wearing bright colours, but wish that I were.

Coolgran65 Thu 17-Mar-16 19:28:34

I wear a lot of taupe/neutral which goes with burgundy, black, Brown. I can only wear a blush toned pink. Dark blue is ok but definitely not pale blue, cream not white, sage green not bright. Most definitely no yellow.
I can pretty much pull anything out of my wardrobe and they will colour match.
It took quite a while to gradually get to this stage. I sold loads of stuff on eBay and only buy (from eBay) or charity shop or Outlet Centre, the right style/shape/colour. Got rid of anything too tight and have far fewer clothes but they are all worn.
It's great not to have loads of clothes that won't be worn.

I've recently had my colours done and it has completely changed my outlook - much to my surprise though some of my own choices are right.

Previously I had dressed in lots of black with bright pink and purple. I was assessed as being 'summer' with cool accents. My makeup was wrong too and the way I applied it.

My basic black should really be grey or French navy and should be worn with less vivid colours. it has made such a difference. I have started by buying some tops from Kettlewell and have found that lots of things I had are 'right' too.

The makeup suggestions make me look much better although I wear very little.

rosesarered Thu 17-Mar-16 22:24:23

Interesting! I have been waiting for your report, so it was worth doing it.

kittylester Fri 18-Mar-16 07:33:24

I would definitely recommend it roses. I got on well with my 'consultant' and she was very informative giving good suggestions too. She actually lives in the next village and uses the library where I volunteer - so a bit daunting but she always breezes in and says something like 'looking good today!'

And the things I have bought go together much better than the random stuff I had before. I doubt I will stop wearing black trousers but I have no end of black t-shirts cluttering up my wardrobe.

I had my colours done ages ago kitty, and it threw up some surprises too, especially yellow, which i love in nature but not on me. i've since found myself almost unconsciously veering towards yellow and I love the effect it has on me (and the complements I got).
One of my schools followed a programme of colour therapy, can't remember the name, but it had remarkable results, especially on children with behavioural difficulties.

ajanela Fri 18-Mar-16 09:44:02

Downtoearth, I am also a Capricorn and recognise the traits, made me smile. Now I am retired I dress more colourfully. Blue is my colour but I wear a variety of colours but with blue tones. I never thought I could wear yellow or green but it depends on the shade and those blue tones.

Anniebach Fri 18-Mar-16 09:44:36

I love green and blue, dislike yellow , orange , red - but do wear a red rugby shirt, hate black and white

Lupatria Fri 18-Mar-16 10:02:46

i'm dressed in my normal black trousers and usually i team these with various colour tops. however i'm in a black and white top today as it would have been my best friend's birthday and i'm going to visit her grave to take her some flowers. decided subconciously i suppose that maybe this top [which i've just realised i wore to her funeral] would be the one to wear today.

when i get home i'll probably change out of it and go back to one of my more colourful tops.

however - dare i say this - i've got a rather gorgeous orange bra on which is trimmed with turquoise and has darker orange, white and turquoise flowers on it!! just thought it suited my mood.

I know someone who used to talk about a 'sartorial time clock' whereby people keep up with the fashion until one point in their lives when their clock stops and they wear the same thing from then on. I have noticed that teachers often wear a variation of school uniform all their lives.

I wear jeans and predominantly navies and blacks. A little dull, methinks.
