As a fellow writer would go for laptop

I would only write on my iPad if I had a separate keyboard for it. There are many options from keyboards that roll up to ones that clip on , so you would still be very lightweight and portable.

For serious writing I really have to be sitting at my desk and typing into a keyboard. I couldn't manage without the mates version of Word. I tried to get by using free software but found that Word suited me much better for editing and being edited. Of course I'm just an old fogey and set in my ways!

Typo- latest not mates! That's what comes of typing into my phone!

Thanks for the advice, fellow writers. I think you have confirmed what I thought - that an iPad is not ideal for writing. The idea of a separate keyboard is a possibility that I'll look into, though. Can you actually get Word on an iPad, does anyone know? Like Jane10 I've tried using free WP software but could not get on with it, partly because it does not come with a word count.

I puzzled over that - I wondered if you got it cheap because you knew someone.

No. I just plain paid for it but it was well worth it -for my blood pressure if nothing else!

I use a laptop for writing stories etc., I print out my work and it's helpful because it often reads differently on paper than it does on the screen.

Good point Falconbird. Once I see it on paper I sometimes can't believe the typos or grammatical infelicities. Very helpful to be able to print stuff out.

I use my lap top but would actually like a larger screen. After several on screen edits I print off and do it on paper - surprising how many more corrections I find.

You can get word on the iPad and also there is now a free programme called pages which is a fair word processor but I don't think it has all the functionality of word .
