Are we supposed to go out and tout for members then? As Alea said we only disclose what we want to. I have never discussed my politics, religion or ethnic background. That is my personal affair. The criteria, to me seems to be, over a certain age,as the topics discussed may be more geared to that, but not always, and that is about it. Yes PRINTMISS a bit early,I will review later.

I am quite open about me, so much so I irritate some. I do wonder how many visit here then run, it seems mostly white, middle class who like to pretend class doesn't exist - which is very middle class thinking. Some as snobbish about education and there is such care not to say too much about feelings , I was sharply told my posts were melodramatic , no idea if this if the welsh me or the fact I don't stop to think how I should word every sentence . There is much caring here but little sharing . I would more diversity, often feel lonely here .

Exactly what I thought, we can't make GN more diverse it will only be made that way by the people who join.

Maybe the name does put off some who aren't actually female grandparents but I don't think a re brand would be possible.

Diversity (or lack of it) only matters if Gransnet presents itself, or is regarded, as representative of the entire population of grandparents. As long as it recognises itself and is recognised as just a self-selecting group, then its diversity only matters to the extent that the group would like more diverse views and experience to be expressed.

I happen to belong to a club with one membership qualification, which would be generally regarded as elitist but reflects a shared experience. If I want diversity I go somewhere else (like Gransnet!).

We do not know how diverse racially, or sexual orientated or anything much else GNRS are and IMO that is good thing.

It is also good that we don't need to go on here and announce our backgrounds unless we choose to.
You cannot force people to join and you have no idea how racially diverse or any other sort of diverse a poster is. I could easily be Afro Carribean for all you know. Just the few grans I have met at meet ups will know for sure.

That is one on the joys of GN. however, as Alea says there is probably a degree of self selecting with regard to education and personality.
Those of us who spend more time GN than others might be more sociable or more lonely than others who post.

There are probably the more lazy slovenly Grans who keep posting on GN, still in their dressing gowns, when they should be finishing off shampooing the carpets at the back end of their living rooms. TTFN

stansgran Don't worry about a morning in bed. I am out this afternoon and all day Monday so I need to get it done before then. If I don't the vax carpet washer will still be sitting in my living room until Tuesday.

It probably will anyway as I want to do the hall carpet then. I have a crawling Grandson coming, he will be very near my carpet I would not want complaints from him about my house keeping. .

I think it matters a lot, especially when talking about certain topics. And there are always new ways we can learn how to do things. or prefer how to do things.
But we cant haul people in here.

You have posted your picture for starters. As have many others. I dont remember seeing a single non white one, though I am relying on memory.

soontobe Given some of the anti immigration comments made on some other threads on GN if you were not White British you might well not want to publish your photograph and to hide your racial identity.

We clearly have geographic and economic diversity. What is it that's lacking?
We simply don't know about ethnic or sexual diversity but as has been said, unless someone as part of a general discussion, discloses that information I can't accept that asking directly would be desirable or acceptable.
So what would we actually be looking for?

Bit of a narrow outlook, but a good try at recovery after revealing a degree of ignorance regarding "Asian" or even your reference to Muslim family members.

Alea, I am pretty sure I have seen your picture twice on here. If you say you havent, I think that is going to be quite easy for me to go and check later.

The search facility very much needs to improve on this site. But I dont suppose it is going to happen.

I did hope this wasn't going to get snarky. Some hope. So I put my photograph on a thread about white hair. Well you know that about me now but I didn't realise it would go in a file to be trotted out as a point scorer. I will be more careful in. future.
