I wonder how many of you remember this attitude towards women? I certainly do. I know many of you don't like links, but this is a classic:

This attitude still persists among many older men (and younger men too but they're more scared to show it.)

Ana Thu 09-Jul-15 17:55:32

I don't need to click on the link, I know what it is! grin

ninathenana Thu 09-Jul-15 18:03:23

I don't think I've ever come across this attitude in real life fortunately .

Maggiemaybe Thu 09-Jul-15 18:50:18

Oh, I have, nina, many times, but particularly in my younger days. A visitor to the export department where I worked alongside 6 men warned me to watch out, or that lot'd have me talking foreign next. My colleagues struggled to keep straight faces while I explained pretty forcibly that being able to talk foreign was precisely why I was employed there.

Love it!
Sadly not entirely outdated hmm look at the England Women's football team
" Our Lionesses go back to being mothers, partners and daughters today. But they have taken on another title - heroes" (English Football Association.)
Do they ever say the men's team go back to being fathers, partners and sons? hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 09-Jul-15 19:13:49

They did get roundly told off for that. grin

The video is a spoof. It was laughing at that attitude even when it was made, years ago.

annodomini Thu 09-Jul-15 20:07:36

I haven't encontered that attitude except perhaps in the sports club I frequented in Kenya where the wives (which I wasn't) sat around gossiping while their husbands stood at the bar - also gossiping.

pompa Thu 09-Jul-15 20:12:05

Didn't realise the video was a spoof hmm Sounded like good common sense, we let you have the vote, what more do you want ?

NfkDumpling Thu 09-Jul-15 20:23:47

Oh Pompa where do we start!

pompa Thu 09-Jul-15 20:25:07

LOL probably a good spanking (with any luck) grin

NfkDumpling Thu 09-Jul-15 20:41:00

If I answer that, I'll be deleted!

pompa Thu 09-Jul-15 20:41:50

Oh, go on, risk it smile

janerowena Thu 09-Jul-15 21:25:05

I certainly remember that attitude, and I remember my mother crying because of it, after a dinner party. She was very unhappy, having a brain and no chance to use it. I also remember cracking jokes and my grandmother telling me to be quiet, men didn't like women to be funny or too clever. Ex OH certainly didn't.

TriciaF Thu 09-Jul-15 21:43:47

My ex OH was the same.
I think the sketch was made in the 1990s, but he hit on the kind of situation that was real in the 50s and 60s.
Even when I was a student I was usually the only woman in the group and I tended to keep quiet unless I was sure of my ground. And as I've mentioned before, I had wanted to study law, but Dad put me off saying I would never get any clients, because people don't take women seriously.

etheltbags1 Thu 09-Jul-15 21:45:58

Its a common attitude in the north working mens clubs, I hate such places and the women who go are making it worse.

I have met many women here who say things like 'eeh I dare not talk aboot politics to my man', for example.

sadly my DD has a partner like this, when are women going to stick up for themselves, not in my lifetime I fear.

Deedaa Thu 09-Jul-15 21:56:26

DD is still coming up against the same attitude particularly from foreign men, mainly from middle eastern countries. They find it very hard to have a mere woman telling them what to do and being in a position of power over them. In some cases they have tried to act as if she and her research don't exist, it doesn't normally take her long to make them see their mistake grin

etheltbags1 Thu 09-Jul-15 22:02:09

when I am in full working mode I just hold my head high and look down my nose at the men and with a few well chosen words I make them feel about an inch high, No man will make me feel inferior. I have raised a child, bought property, ran a business and educated myself all without a man.

pompa Thu 09-Jul-15 22:16:23

WE must mix with an unusual group of friends. I cannot think of a single female friend that would not have her say, and be taken notice of (or else).

vampirequeen Thu 09-Jul-15 22:18:34

But wasn't it nice to stay at home all day drinking coffee and being looked after by the men [wooden spoon] [ducking behind sofa] grin

etheltbags1 Thu 09-Jul-15 22:18:52

you sound like a southerner pompa, some northerners are behind the times.

etheltbags1 Thu 09-Jul-15 22:20:05

No vanmpire queen I would rather work and be in control of the men and be the one doing the hitting with the wooden spoon.

etheltbags1 Thu 09-Jul-15 22:20:56

unless maybe he was really rich and spoiled me rotten and I did not have to work. We all have our price

pompa Thu 09-Jul-15 22:30:21

I'm a Yorkshireman, but I live in East Anglia. All the women I know are more than capable of equal opinions (they are of course, usually wrong) smile

vampirequeen Thu 09-Jul-15 22:34:10

I used to live near an Asian lady who was slowly going insane through boredom. She was incredibly intelligent and spoke seven languages but all day and every day she cleaned the house, cooked the meals and did the ironing for her husband, her elderly MIL and six children.

I really admired her. She fought hard for her girls to go to uni and even to live in the halls of residence rather than relatives. She said she wanted them to experience uni properly like she had and hoped she could make sure they married men who would give them the freedom to have careers rather than just be housewives like she'd had to be.

She succeeded too. All three of her girls have careers.
