Family name in use for 150 years

In theory I like this idea , especially as none of my DGDs have been given my name as it is too "odd" , but how do you know who you are talking about ? . In school we had Anne , Wee Anne ( she isn't so wee now ) Annies Anne , they were all cousins ( not real name of the cousins )

Absolutely. When my OH was first introduced to the family he was mesmerised by so many of them with the same name. Even today, my mum is referred to as ????? With her maiden name after,. My 85 year old cousin is still little???? Most of them were identified by their husbands first name but others by different descriptions.

We had ????seamstress, ????from the Alley.

We have a girl's name that has been in use in my family for that even longer littleflo as, at least, my great, great grandmother had the name, and it did cause confusion. We had a 'big auntie A', a 'little auntie A' and an A who always had her maiden name attached to it almost as one word. Our youngest daughter now has the name but I suspect she will be the last, at least for a while.

On my husband's side there was a Mayor of Worcester who was a great, great uncle and whose name has been used in every generation since then but that looks unlikely to continue either.

In my dad's family there were a lot of Johns. His grandfather was John, he had uncles John and cousins John. He also had a cousin called John Oswald. Since Oswald was not the family name and since they only called each other by Christian names and nobody had a middle name it was a long time before he understood how John Oswald could be related to him. John Oswald was the exception who had a middle name to distinguish him from all the other Johns because it was all getting a bit silly!

My paternal family recycled the same names.
Great grandfather was Richard Alfred.
Grandpa was George Henry, his brothers Charles and Joseph.
The next generation (grandpa's sons) were George Henry, Richard Joseph, Joseph Charles, and then my dad was called Dunstan, because when he was born, they thought he might be blind (he wasn't) but St Dunstan is the patron saint of blind people. Dad had a cousin Alfred Charles.

My DD did a nice thing when naming her children. Her DD has her sister's name for a middle name, and her DS has SiL's brother's name for his middle name.

Yes, that is nice. DD has done something similar and used the children's grandfathers' names as middle names.

DD's boys middle names are their father's grandfathers names.
DH and DS both have DH's father's name as a middle name. I have no idea how far back it goes as FiL was a Banardos boy. We have registered to find out about late FiL.

DD gave her DD my first name in the Irish version as her second name. DS gave his DD my second name as her second name but it also happens to be her Mum's first name and her other Gran's second name!

DD gave her son my DH's first name (although he uses his second name) as his second name and that is also his Dad's second name.

Both my DD and DS have two middle names from DH's family tree (mine is woefully lacking in names I'd chose to use), all dating back to the 1700's.
DGS has coincidentally another 'old' name as his middle name, also dating back from 1700's to the early 20th century.

It wasn't particularly a deliberate choice, more of a coincidence for our children's names.

Previous three generations were Davids, but in our generation there were no boys. However, one of my GSs has it as a middle name and one of my cousin's sons has it too. In Scotland, there is also a tradition of giving a family name as a middle name, so I have my English granny's maiden name and my sister has my Scottish granny's maiden name.

We have had Clarissa in my mother's family since at least 1780.my GM was Clara and one other was also given that name but every other generation had Clarissa. I was missed out as as was my DD but my GD has it as a second name after my mother (her GGM)

Fortunately in my mother's family the first names were relegated to middle names, in my uncle's time, as they were Edwin St.john. My uncle had a very narrow escape. Way, way back for hundreds of years. hose names have travelled to the USA now, along with my uncle and his descendants. Except they now have things like 'Guy' in front of them - a bit unfortunate for my poor cousin, I thought, to be called Guy in the USA. Just as bad as Edwin over here. (apologies to any Edwins)

We have a girl's name in the family which I have traced back to the 1600s; it was my mother's middle name, it is my daughter's middle name.
My great-niece has it as a middle name and I do hope someone will carry it on through the generations.
We also have another name on the male side of the family which has been carried on as a middle name for nearly 200 years.

Why is Edwin odd?
It was my DG's middle name (but there have been none since then!)

We have William, used for the eldest boy on my dad's side since further back than anyone can remember, and for at least one boy in each clutch of my mum's family. Plenty of girls in the family married men of that name too, so there were always a confusion of Bills, Billies and Wills at our gatherings.

I was so touched that my DS and DD2 chose it as a middle name for their DS.

DH's family name is Meeshach, right back to the 18th century which is where it belongs.
I know a little Edwin, it suits him very well and doesn't sound odd at all.

There were some very strange names in both DH's and my family trees; thank goodness the only one that has survived the generations is nice and very popular again now.

Yes Rosequartz.
Shadrach, Meshach and Abendigo. They did something interesting with a furnace though for the life of me I can't remember what.
DHs oldest brother was the last one saddled with it and then only as a middle name.

How many of you have Euphemia in the family ancestral line?

My daughter has named her two sons after mine and my husband's grandfathers and they both had traditional names going back for generations in their families.
All of my grandchildren have names that were in common usage in the days of my own grandparents and appear elsewhere in the family tree. My son, who is yet to even think of producing children, has already chosen names for either gender that are traditional family names.

I'm not taking offence in anyway but I think it's a fairly ordinary name for his generation.

If mum had had her way my brother would be .....help me out here Welsh people Caradock ??? Apologies, I googled it but can't find the spelling.
