galen Your 12 months too late, this time last year DD was starting her maternity leave and I could have come down to meet you its just a short train journey from here to York , but she goes back on Monday full time and I might be a frazzle by Friday. There are a few Gnetters from that area, have a look on the Local site.

I've just had an sale ad from East Coast Trains that Edinburgh to York is £5 each way (and only £20 for First Class) which is an offer you can't refuse, so I am thinking seriously of a day trip down. Look around York by day, meet Galen in the evening. Anyone else on the East Coast line interested?

Just got back from an unplanned weekend in York. Train Museum, Yorvik, Minster, Castle Museum and loads of cake! Chose the wrong weekend for walking the walls because of the gales, but DH and DS (age 13) had a great time...lovely city!

When the floods were on in 2000, there were a few days when there was only one road open, the A64 south to Leeds. That was a bit scary then. My grandson keeps asking when we can go to York for a school trip!

I can recommend Caffe la Tazzina and Kapadokya Turkish Restaurant. Both near station. I have put listings on GN local North Yorkshire.

I like Cafe Concerto. It's near the Minster, and you can sit in the window and look at the Minster. Lovely food, too.
