I like Cafe Concerto. It's near the Minster, and you can sit in the window and look at the Minster. Lovely food, too.

I can recommend Caffe la Tazzina and Kapadokya Turkish Restaurant. Both near station. I have put listings on GN local North Yorkshire.

Galen - York is one of my favourite cities. I'm quite envy

durhamjen Sun 11-Jan-15 20:13:55

When the floods were on in 2000, there were a few days when there was only one road open, the A64 south to Leeds. That was a bit scary then. My grandson keeps asking when we can go to York for a school trip!
His parents usually do the Jane Tomlinson run, and think it's the best one they have ever done. That's usually in warmer weather.

Very high durhamjen, flooding out onto the grass near Clifford's Tower.

I agree, Pittcity. Lived there for ten years. How high was the river?

Just got back from an unplanned weekend in York. Train Museum, Yorvik, Minster, Castle Museum and loads of cake! Chose the wrong weekend for walking the walls because of the gales, but DH and DS (age 13) had a great time...lovely city!

B****r That offer has ended. I should have moved faster. I have had a virus of some sort and not been very efficient. Sorry Galen

I am going next week... for a day!

Elegran Tue 06-Jan-15 14:04:39

I've just had an sale ad from East Coast Trains that Edinburgh to York is £5 each way (and only £20 for First Class) which is an offer you can't refuse, so I am thinking seriously of a day trip down. Look around York by day, meet Galen in the evening. Anyone else on the East Coast line interested?

Sorry you are 68 years too late, was born there, but only been back a few times, great city (out of season)

Stansgran Sun 04-Jan-15 17:10:23

I'm often in York but generally to help with spotty or snotty children. The hotel is next door to the station and has lovely unusual chandeliers- Murano glass I think. I think we may be away in Feb.We are looking at some last minute sunshine.....Feeling desperate after the rain but nearer the time may be able to give you a pm

Post this again on "Meetups" - you never know! Or on the Yorkshire local site. Then there are the Northumberland grans, who are usually up for meeting for some nosh.

Hmm. Just wondering about a little trip down to York - don't much like travelling at night though, and if you are at the course all day . . .

tiggypiro Sun 04-Jan-15 16:17:56

I could have come down to meet you Galen but I'm off to Beijing early on the 11th so will still be trying to get all DD's shopping in the cases. I do hope you have a great time in 'God's own county' ! Will you have much time for a look around ?

Galen Sat 03-Jan-15 22:06:56

Not important. I just wondered if any one wanted to meet on one of the two nights I'm there

glassortwo Sat 03-Jan-15 21:46:52

galen Your 12 months too late, this time last year DD was starting her maternity leave and I could have come down to meet you its just a short train journey from here to York , but she goes back on Monday full time sad and I might be a frazzle by Friday. There are a few Gnetters from that area, have a look on the Local site.

Galen Sat 03-Jan-15 21:35:59

Do any of you live in York, as I have to go there for a one day course on the 11th FEBRUARY? I'm going up on the 10th and returning on the 12th staying at the Royal York Hotel where the course is.
