Christmas bling for the home?

Definitely blingy. Although a lot of our decs are old. I made the fairy on the tree when my girls were tiny. And I like the old fashioned paperchains - the linked ones.

I always get into a heck of a state when putting them up though. Seems to take me all day. And I'm fit to drop by the time I've finished.

At this time of year, I will jump on any excuse to decorate the house. I do this for St Andrews Day, Christmas and Burns Night. It definitely brightens our mood during the dark days of winter. DC always enjoyed it and now, GCs enjoy it too. I now put some clear lights on a bush I have at the front.

Minimalist. I have a few 'choice' items, twinkly lights, a garland on the front door and a big tree. I used to have garlands twisted up the bannister, all round the fireplaces and candles all the way up the stairs and holly and mistletoe hanging from every conceivable place. But, no more. There are boxes of decorations from the past which don't see daylight these days. I feel claustrophobic with too much clutter and the day everything is taken down, I feel a huge sense of relief and space. I am considering putting the tree outside this year - there are large bi-fold doors in the kitchen so it could be seen from the house quite well!

Strangely enough Ana I have never tried that, may get the old DH too excited.

Marmight, I am wondering if you are my long-lost twin. I keep reading your posts and thinking 'I do that!' You even watch all the same tv programmes.

I used to have a tree in every room, and garlands everywhere. I am trying to be minimalist but am not being allowed to be, partly because DBH&Son just ignore me and put it up anyway, partly because of the GCs coming here every Christmas. I quietly throw out a few decorations every year, but DBH is a real decorations addict so buys almost as many as I discard. I can think I'm safe, then he will return from a quick trip to Homebase with a whole new string of lights or something.

We do take it in turns to choose colour schemes though, and I usually aim for plain whites and silvers when it is my turn.

I do like lots of white lights everywhere, it makes the winter gloom seem less depressing, I keep the lights on the weeping cherry in the front garden until the end of march.

I really enjoy Xmas lights. I like lights at anytime to be honest, they are cheery and I would have them on in one form or another all year if it didn't cost money.

I think it's great for kids (of all ages) to see them and whilst I appreciate it does add to the argument that Xmas has become commercialised it doesn't stop me enjoying them.

It's quite difficult to buy good 'outside' lighting that run off the electricity supply I find. I think solar powered lights are rubbish for obvious reasons at this time of the year but they seem to be everywhere.

I put up lots of garlands and wreaths on doors, indoors and outside, mantles etc. We don't have a lot of space and so I put lots of twinkly lights on my very tall grape ivy indoor plants instead of a tree.

Oh.... And I display family and close friend's cards and put the rest on a nice dish on the hearth.

All go do with available space.

But only because I am useless at decorating at general. And I just dont like many christmas decorations, so dont buy many new ones.
Oh, and the house does not lend itself to that many handy places to put them.

Last year we hardly bothered at all as we went away for Christmas and it was all slightly odd. My husband did put some fairy lights up around a mirror we have in the hall and when it was time to take them down he decided, most uncharacteristically, to leave them. So we already have a head start this year as they're still there.
I'm neither one thing nor the other really. We always have a real tree and it's usually quite big and nicely decorated - plus a wreath on the front door and a few candles and such. This year Lidl have done some pretty felt advent stocking garlands and I've bought one to put on the mantelpiece, but that's about it really.
Must confess that I spent yesterday evening wrapping presents to send overseas and whilst I was doing that I took a phone call from my father in law about his Christmas tree.......Christmas is creeping up on me.

POGS I have a string of solar lights in my bush outside and they work fine at this time of the year, it's now 21.51 and they are still flashing. I think there is too much build up to Christmas but do light lights/candles at this time of the year, it helps brighten up the dark days/nights. They said on radio today that the John Lewis Christmas advert is out so it must be getting near to Christmas, it's 7 weeks away for goodness sake. We do decorate outside with a few lights. We went to USA for New Year 2 years ago, the lights outside the houses there were fantastic

Sadly my front bush has just been heavily pruned so it will be difficult to dress up this year.

I do have a few spikey bits around the back though, so who knows I might still achieve a festive display.
