David Cameron has replaced Maria Miller with a chap from a state school Pakistani background. (albeit a very rich one). He is now culture secretary with an overarching brief for diversity issues.
"Sajid Javid, who replaces Ms Miller as Culture Secretary, made headlines last month when he suggested no women "merited" a place on the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC)." quote from
So one fewer senior post goes to a woman. (now down to 3 out of 22 posts) But unbeknownst to us, Maria Miller was also Minister for Women!
This role has now been filled by a treasury minister who will be answerable to the culture secretary and allowed to attend cabinet. And will have an important job (3rd in line) in the Treasury. Nicky Morgan was a corporate lawyer and voted against gay marriage because of her Christian principles. Since October she has had a brief for childcare policies within the Treasury.
"And in 2011, Ms Morgan backed anti-abortion campaigner Nadine Dorries' amendment to the Health and Social Care Bill, to require independent advice be made available to women requesting an abortion." (another quote from the Independent article). Independent advice sounds innocuous but that independent advice is I think a euphemism for giving representatives of anti-abortion organisations free access to women seeking an abortion. It could well indicate that Morgan holds anti-abortion views.
Is breathtaking move on the part of the PM going to win more votes than it loses? Remembering that in the recent Mumsnet commissioned poll, he was doing so badly with women?
