LENT

I always always try to give up swearing for Lent as I am just too weak to give up chocolate. I have to say I have always relapsed but as ever will keep on trying. I wish you luck Nonu you have more resolve than me.

When I was little and we lived abroad, the school I went to was Roman Catholic and the Nuns used to make us save up all of our sweets and then we got to eat them at the end of Lent, it was great.

I'm with Giles Fraser on this one. Not keen on the Lent of cheery self improvement.

I always give up chocolate, cake and biscuits for Lent and it is not easy as I crave sweet stuff

No Ana. Love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. Take your pick. It would be hard to accomplish all of them. But it's worth a try.

I was giving up being non-forebearing with DH. It's gone down the pan already. Sigh!

I have often thought that taking something up for Lent could be more constructive, whether it be something spiritual like prayer or meditation, or physical (early morning walkies, says Grace, hopefully) or practical as in doing something for others - like practising patience and forbearance when you know somebody regularly gets up your nose?
Maybe simply counting to twenty before re-thinking a sharp retort on GN, Ana?

I agree with MiceElf.

It reminds me of politicians who live on benefits for a couple of weeks and then feel very smug about their "achievement".

Surely to strive to be a kinder person, or to do something useful would be far more constructive and meaningful?

No one has ever had to to do anything for Lent. For those who choose to mark this season of preparation and repentance in some way, it will be a personal matter and not something to be trumpeted from the rooftops, or on GN. Neither is it appropriate to quiz others about what they might, or might not, be doing unless they have chosen to share with another who could help them to fulfil their intention.

I'm not a Christian but I do know something about Christianity. Well said *MiceElf; I salute you.
