Can anybody enlighten me (no pun intended!) how the olympic flame is transported to UK onboard an aeroplane? I cannot even take my knitting on board with me, or carry a nail file!!!!!!! There must be a very simple answer somewhere confused

Barrow Thu 17-May-12 09:13:48

I believe this is a private charter plane. Presumably if you hire a plane you can take whatever you want on board. I am curious as to the logistics of transporting the flame. Does someone sit there holding the torch or is it contained in a box or, my sneaking suspicion, is it put out once it is on the plane and then relit using a match just before they get off!!!

There was a previous thread on this subject (The Flame...)

Thanks Anagram and Barrow, looked up the link and there was the info!!!!
Are gransnetters looking forward to the olympics, will you be glued to your chair watching everyday and every event possible. Will you previously have watched Euro 2012, Cricket, Wimbledon, The Derby etc etc.? Or will you be doing something else...........What!!!!!!!

I'm sort of interested in the Flame as it passes along the road at the top of my road. Other than that I may watch the opening and closing ceremonies unless I'm doing something else more interesting. Other than that, I am not in the slightest bit interested in the Olympics

"It also went out in 1976 after the Montreal Olympics had started and an official mistakenly relit it using a cigarette lighter."

grin

I suppose that was marginally better than him using the flame to light his fag.

I dunno though..............

"The final torchbearer, whose identity is kept secret until the last moment, lights the monumental Olympic cauldron in the stadium,"

I wonder who that will be?!

David Beckham? Wills?

I hope it's a little kid. That would be nice.

It needs to be a woman.

Someone with the torch in one hand and a nice feminist banner in the other.

GERALDINE!!!

Feel like a real killjoy, but this fuss about the torch bores me to tears, especially when so much of the BBC news yesterday was devoted to the arrival of the "flame " (in a Davey lamp) to our nearby base at Culdrose. There was a whole weekend in Falmouth around the flame coming through the town, I really wouldn't have been tempted to go up our drive to see it. And although I know it is stupid when you think about it, I really believed someone was going to run with it all the time, not run to the end of the road and then get in a car!
I may look at one or two of the events when the Olympics actually begin, but as I have no interest in sport, it won't keep me glued to the screen!

Me too Dahlia. Those who enjoy it are welcome, but I'm hanging on for Wimbledon smile
