I've read all Michael Connelly's previous books and enjoyed them, but this one seems like it was written by someone else. The writing style is very flat, the characters are cardboard and the plot is very weak. To check that it wasn't just my opinion, I looked at reviews on Goodreads and found many others with similar opinions.

I think some authors are expected to churn out books regularly and may pay others to do the work for them.

I haven't read the book in question Farmor15 but I agree that some popular authors churn out potboilers from time to time, it's disappointing. Peter James cones to mind.

That's a shame to hear! I haven't picked up 'Nightshade' yet, but I've noticed this trend with a few other prolific crime writers lately. Sometimes they just have an off- Drift Hunters book, but I hope Connelly gets his groove back in the next one.

I too love the Bosch books and don’t mind the Lincoln Lawyer but I gave up on this book. Connelly is obviously trying to establish a new detective for a new series but this won’t be it. I’ve also stopped reading Lee Child (plus his brother). I used to love those too.
