Books for 9 year old DGS - help

Our GS is just nine. He likes the Alex Ryder books, The Roman Mysteries collection by Caroline Lawrence, and books by Ali Sparkes. Oh, and the Beast Quest books (his favourites). He has lots of others but I can't bring them to mind at the moment!

I think I've recommended www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/ before but have no hesitation in doing so again. There are reviews by children which might give you an idea of the kind of things your GS would like. You can find books for his age range. Does he like Horrible Histories?

I believe the Malorie Blackman and Michael Murporgo books are good - I think they write for different age groups so you would need to check the suggested age range.

My son enjoyed Watership Down - many others but I can't remember.

My grandson enjoyed Goodnight Mr Tom, Skellig and Holes.

I would suggest The Diamond Brothers series by Anthony Horowitz.You can buy in a boxed set of 7 books from Amazon.My 2 older grandsons both loved these books at a similar age.

Diamond Brothers was one of the ones I couldn't bring to mind and I bought those for him just before Christmas. (Getting worse! Put a jar of pickles in the dishwasher this morning instead of the fridge!!).

Just a ps - I have read odd chapters of David Walliams' 'Grandpa's Great Escape' with GS, and it is very funny. He has promised to lend it to me when he's finished it!

Gransnet ran a Puffin Children's Classucs competition a while ago with some great titles - perhaps they'll run another one ???

Someone I know wrote books about a boy called Jack Brenin set in Shropshire (Catherine Cooper)
I bought some from her but have yet to give them to DGS, they look very good

DGD loves Roald Dahl books
Trying to remember who wrote those books about the Roman Legions, was it Rosemary someone? Sutcliffe? Are they for children?

I was going to suggest Harry Potter. My DS enjoyed the Famous Five books at about that age. What about the Wolves of Willoughby Chase? I believe there are more in the series.

The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan is great for boys. All my GSs have loved them.

Would the Swallows and Amazons be too dated for him?

I read the Eagle of the Ninth Series just before Christmas as I wanted to know whether it would be suitable for GS, who was then eight (he is not just nine). To be honest, and please feel free to disagree with me, I think it might be more suitable for older children. I didn't have any issues with the content, and it is a wonderful story - I thoroughly enjoyed it - but at that age I wondered whether the way in which it was written would hold his interest. He is an avid reader and has read all but one of the Harry Potter series, so he doesn't have a short attention span. Any opinions?

I read all those Rosemary Sutcliffe books a couple of years back. Loved them. Not sure I realised they were for children.

The Beast Quest books that Cari mentioned was a big hit with dgs2 when he was that age. His poor mother had to wade through book after book at bedtimes.

For exciting and fast moving adventure books for both boys and girls I would recommend the two book series by the award winning author Chris Bradford - there are 8 in the Young Samurai series and 5 in the Bodyguard series.
