Quik question (daughter w new baby)

Hey all,
I'm new here. My daughter just had a baby 3 weeks ago, and her husband took off 3 weeks, and now he's back at work. I went to visit, and she's asking for advice to get baby to sleep. I suggested letting baby nurse then when she falls asleep, just scoot away and get your own shut-eye. Oh noooo, she says...Sharing a bed is a no-no. I get it. Sort of. But I raised 3 of my own and slept (in the early weeks) with all 3. Sigh. Any advice from grans who "did it the old way" but the old way is now a no-no?

Congratulations Gmax 👶 👩‍🍼

I can't help with advice, I can't remember what I did 50 years ago to get the babies to sleep. I do remember the bone deep fatigue of those early weeks and absolutely snatching 'power naps' whenever possible.

Hey thanks. This question sort of extends to other topics of "The old ways are no good!"
I'd like to think I have good advice, and it's to my chagrin when I'm told, No! That's not good! (smile, sigh)

I never slept with my babies because was so wiped was afraid I’d roll on top of them. And it can happen. Is called co-sleeping and some new mums do do this, a friend of my DD did but hubby had to sleep in the guest room.
Would advise she puts a top she has recently worn in thebasket/cot, and let the baby sleep on top of it, apparently the baby smells the mother especially if she is breast feeding and settles much easier. My DDs were both advised to do this by a midwife am not sure if it worked, but lots of winding seems to work also imho.

That's a frequent refrain on these forums ... 😊! I meant to add, I can't even help with what worked for my DIL... I only have one grandchild and I was not really ever asked for advice.

Someone else will come along soon who may be able to suggest something. Good luck!

Number one rule of grandparenting - NEVER EVER say "well, I didn't do it like that"

Many congrats xx I was “told off” too by my darling step-daughter, when her 6 month old would never sleep or settle.

I suggested she try the “shut the door and walk away” method! I never ever offered advice again grin

Your little lovie is very little and your DD does need to try and sleep when he does and, as we all know, eventually they settle.

I never shared a bed with any of mine 40 odd years ago. The Health Visitor advised against it and I could see the logic of that. However when baby goes to sleep in the safety of their crib it is a good idea to have a sleep yourself. A lot of mums back then used to drive around in their car with baby and cot strapped in until baby fell asleep - I think they still do. Dd had lots of problems getting gd to go to sleep especially at night and paid for a sleep consultant as she was up at least 14 times a night. The advice was to put baby down and if they cried not to go to them straight away but to wait 10 minutes. Then if still crying go in but only stay a few minutes. It seemed to work.

The secret to get any babies or toddlers in fact to sleep , are no rocking , nursing , or feeding to sleep, sadly you have to gradually teach them to fall asleep , without , any of the above, it really does work , just a gradual process , amazing , because if you do any of the above , they wake pretty quickly and need rocking nursing or feeding to sleep , again the process must be where you want them to sleep , not the sofa , on your lap , or in your bed , the earlier you do it the easier it is , .In my experience , parents become so sleep deprived they will do all of the above , to create good sleep for all ,

I've learned not to offer advice unless specifically asked. It would seem that all the rules and regulations have changed and things that were tried, tested and worked for my 40 odd years ago are now big No-Nos.

Cossy - thank you for that. That's a good example of an old trick that no one these days will do - but the doctors used to advise thusly! ❤️

When I was suffering from lack of sleep when my first baby was born my doctor said when baby falls asleep go to bed yourself but don’t just fall into bed, take your clothes off as if you’re really going to bed. Not sure if I ever took his advice but it did make sense.
