IS the USA open or not?

Yesterday I got an email from the GOV.UK saying there has been a change made: 'The FCDO no longer advises against all but essential travel to the US, based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks'. I was so overwhelmed with happiness that I burst into tears. As many of you know I have not seen my AC or GC's for more than 20 months now and it's heart-breaking. I checked the airlines and they are taking bookings.However, on the USA Embassy website they are still saying that people from the UK cannot travel to the USA. I have searched the internet to find more info but can't. Can anyone please help me find more info or do any of you know someone that might know the answer.

I’m in the same boat as you. Haven’t seen DS for 18 months. Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait a while longer. The US is still refusing entry to British citizens if you have been in the UK in the 14 days before travel. There is the odd exemption, eg if your spouse or you have a child under 21 who is a US citizen and you are going to be with them but just visiting family is still a no-no. This is a problem with UK guidance - it’s all very well having an amber list of countries but it doesn’t tell you that many of those countries won’t let you in. DD is in Thailand, which is on the amber list but borders are closed and not likely to reopen before October, if then, as hardly anyone in Thailand has been vaccinated.

It seems that, like me, you are not a VIP Newatthis. There are flights leaving but the hoi polloi do not stand a chance of getting to see their loved ones.
Perhaps we should start blogs and become “influencers” (whatever the hell that might be), or a politician, even a disgraced politician (they seem to be able to travel anywhere at any time with no mention of quarantine).
When this is all over I expect to see a huge political backlash and it will serve them right.

The US is closed to many countries including the UK, you need a visa to travel there anyway, emergency travel is possible but a 7 day quarantine for that. It’s easier for them to visit us at present, the rules could change at any time.

I’m in the same position, with a son and his family in the US. We haven’t seen them for more than two years.

I wouldn’t travel to the US right now- no one is masked and vaccination rates in many states are still very low.

This. Young kids are so close to being eligible for vaccination- book their travel to the UK for December and odds are high they’ll all have been vaccinated and will be able to safely travel to you.

Had a look and it is still a one way system, they can come here, we can’t go there. One travel company advising how to escape quarantine, by travelling via Ireland. How is that right. My son desperate to see his dad.
