I was thinking of buying one of those push onto the taps shower units. Has anyone used them and do they work OK.?

We have one, Falconbird, and it works really well. The position of the bath in our bathroom would have made it difficult to have had a shower installed, and we didn't want to lose the bath. The hose/tap attachments are held in place with Velcro straps. All you need to do, is get the shower head fixed to the wall. Easy (and not at all expensive)!
