Bit of a shock a couple of years back to discover my old work place was a hole in the ground!

I left two jobs when the firms were bought out/taken over.

My first Saturday job was in a nice department store - long gone. (Was a Curry's last time I looked. )

The one I worked at until my first son came along has changed names several times but I think it's still there. Might check next time I'm in Mannheim.

Firms are closing down at an alarming rate. Established companies, too, not just small businesses.

The first place I worked was a factory, it's now Tesco, next place was a hospital, now has quite expensive houses built where it once was

Of the four places I worked before having children, three still exist, one still in the same site (Shell Oil on the south bank).

After having children, I worked in the NHS and some places are still the same. My last job was in a major London hospital, so still there.

The two universities I worked for are still going strong although one is always rumoured to be in financial trouble. The large oil company I worked for when I left school still exists as does the library which was my Saturday job.

The primary school I taught at was amalgamated with another, so, no not really. I did several holiday jobs as a student. Kodak, packing photographs and office work. Those places have gone now. Only the post office, where I worked at Christmas is still there. Though I think they don’t take students these days.

Well I retired and went back so yes mines still there!,

No, I had over 30 temp/part time and full time jobs (whatever I could get over the years). Only a handful of them survive - Inland Revenue and Banks being two. Third sector being another 2, Council Social Work being the other.

Well, the Ministry of Defence is still going strong! As for the later ones; Abbey National has folded, the cleaning company I worked for after that closed after being in business for a hundred and sixty years. I was then in at the inception of a firm of occupational psychologists and saw it burgeon into a thriving company with a fine reputation, but by the time I was ready to retire it had all but gone to the wall.

Yes, I worked for SSD and it's still up and running from the same place tho grossly cut back,

My job however was as volunteer and community organiser - and they now have more organisers than before, for obvious reasons.

(Supporting volunteer run organisations in more sectors than before, it was originally for Lunch clubs but now across the board).

4 hospitals, 2 in Scotland, two in England are all blocks of flats. The last one in central London moved just after I left In the last, there is parking for ambulances, but maybe people don't need the use of a car these days after being discharged.

One is still running. It was a care home but is under different management now.
Woolworths where I worked as a Saturday girl is no more, neither is the large psychiatric hospital where I achieved my RMN qualification, which is sad as it was very needed. Care in the community is a poor substitute in my opinion.

My first job, in 1975, was N.A.A.F.I. offices - gone.
2nd was Littlewoods store - Primark these days.
3rd was B.T. offices - moved elsewhere.

After that, a variety of care agencies, some of which are still operating.

Yes. Our district general hospital is still up and running. Albeit hollowed out by decisions made. No more A&E 24/7 with consultant /registrar on call. No more ICU with all that equipment and expertise just gone. No Special Care Baby Unit. It looks the same on the outside (was the 1st NHS hospital in the country, opened officially by Nye Bevan in 1947) but inside? It looks like a (fairly empty) glorified health centre. Huge long corridors that used to be bustling with medics, porters and patients - now empty you can see all the way down them, without a soul walking them. It’s sad really.

And yet the population locally has grown. Seems daft to me. Who makes these decisions?

Yes-but schools often do.

Ziplok Sat 24-Oct-26 21:16:28

One place I worked is now demolished, another place is still going strong 😄.

Cabbie21 Sat 24-Oct-26 21:05:53

The schools in which I taught still exist, though some have slightly changed eg one girls’ school has merged with its parallel boys’ school.

Hospital I worked at is now beautiful houses worth up to million.

Gwyllt Sat 24-Oct-26 20:54:00

The first hospital I worked at is still standing but it looks very different though some of the old buildings are still in use.
The second closed in 1978

Plevey08 Sat 24-Oct-26 20:39:40

My first Saturday job in Woolworths...on the loo roll counter, selling Broncho paper.. 😊
School I taught at is still alive and kicking, partly modernised now.

I worked in different bank branches.

One is being made into flats, after being empty for ages.

Another couple are shops.

Very much so! When I joined the company in 2004, we were a team of 7. By the time I retired in 2020, there were over 1000 employees. The company was bought out by an American company in 2022 and, as of July 2026, there are over 82,000 employees worldwide. My old office building is still operational.

tanith Sat 24-Oct-26 20:29:30

Jaxjacky Sat 24-Oct-26 19:58:06

My two main jobs in project management from the age of 24 until retirement are, a large IT company and a city council.
