I say well done GB News. 👏👏👏👏

Magenta8 Fri 26-Jun-26 07:43:04

I watched it once and as I like to have my prejudices affirmed not questioned, I never watched GB News again.

Actually I like the news to be as unfiltered as possible.

I suspect the viewers of GB News are actively encouraged to vote which may account for their continuing success in popularity poles. Whereas, I don't think other news channels bother to court popularity in the same way.

Oreo Fri 26-Jun-26 09:05:14

Just to correct myself
it’s Stephen and Ellie ( not Patrick!) on the morning show đŸ„Ž
Must be the heat.

Oreo Fri 26-Jun-26 09:08:18

And just for the record, I can’t stand Farage.
GBNews is now just very good after years ago a very shaky start. You just pick and choose which programmes on it to watch.

AGAA4 Fri 26-Jun-26 09:27:12

I won't watch it because Farage is making a huge amount of money from it.
It is still not watched as widely as BBC or Sky News. I know BBC don't seem to do popularity polls as far as I know.

BlueBelle

Lovetopaint I m with you 100%
If I had no other programme to watch I wouldn’t touch anything he was involved in with a barge pole, hideous man with hideous views.
I wouldn’t want to be around anyone with a liking of Farage and his ilk
Call me a leftie or any other disparaging name you wish, this is beyond politics and political parties it’s about treatment of human beings, it’s the whipped up hatred seen in pre war Germany
Such short memories

I’ve still got some tar and feathers left if you’re interested and also I’ve got quite a useful pitchfork (needs a polish but I will sort it)
Several have said they’re interested, but I think they turned out to be just time waster so it’s still available at very, very good price. đŸ€Ł

Shinamae 😁

AGAA4 Fri 26-Jun-26 09:49:46

No wonder Farage is scared and wanting more security. Tar, feathers and now pitchfork!
A pot of yogurt is a little kinder.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 26-Jun-26 09:54:36

Thank you Graphite. It seems that most nominations were for daytime news, and I watch only in the evening, so my surprise at no appearance for my choices is explained.

Casdon Fri 26-Jun-26 10:02:19

The award was not for the best news channel, it was for the best news programme.

For clarity, as they are quite different things.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 26-Jun-26 10:10:58

Understood, Casdon.
The award makes sense, now.

foxie48 Fri 26-Jun-26 10:56:44

The third part of the The Rest is Politics podcast on who funds Reform was released today. Lots in this episode about GB news and what links it has to Reform and why it's particularly useful to Farage. foc for anyone to listen to in a day or so.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 26-Jun-26 11:48:01

Thank you, foxie.

I don’t watch a lot of mainstream TV, so awards for popularity don’t mean much to me as I don’t recognise most of the shows and much of celebrity culture. However, the history of the awards does interest me. TRIC was set up “to promote goodwill in the television and radio industries”. I don’t see a lot of goodwill in what GB News does in promoting the divisive politics of the Reform Party.

It’s only since 2019 that the awards have been decided by a public vote from a list of predetermined nominations within various categories.

At the first awards lunch held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London in 1969, three awards were presented to Val Doonican, Kenneth Horne and The Forsyte Saga. How times change.

It’s interesting to look back at previous awards to get a feel for what wins and for what. For example, in 2015, the winner of the best Factual category was The Great British Bake Off - up against Paul O'Grady: For the Love of Dogs and the The Mekong River with Sue Perkins.

I’m not going to trawl all the archives to see what factual programmes were broadcast across all channels but it would have been a preceding year full of national and international events like any other to make factual programmes about.

A quick look at what was on BBC Horizon: Ebola: The Search for a Cure; How to Feed the Planet (that was the late Dr Michael Mosely); Inside the Dark Web looking at hackers and the scientists whose technology is fighting against Internet surveillance. Similarly, BBC Panorama: Stolen Childhoods: The Grooming Scandal; When the Caring Stops – An undercover investigation that exposed appalling neglect and poor treatment of elderly residents inside care homes; Workers on the Breadline – examining how millions of British workers were earning too little to live on, relying on government benefit top-ups.

That’s just a few. Nevertheless, the best "Factual" programme as voted for by the industry was about hobbyists making bread and cake. The best "Reality" programme was Strictly Come Dancing. Surely those were and are celebrity-driven entertainment?

Best News Programme wasn’t introduced as a category until 2021. The shortlist was BBC Breakfast, Good Morning Britain and Sky News - won by Good Morning Britain.

GB News was launched in June 2021.

Press Gazette reported this year that GB News beats Sky News on average viewership but not on total reach or digital followings. It says this means that the channel is likely to have more live TV viewers watching at any time than its more established rivals but has a lower total weekly reach than the BBC News Channel and Sky News. It suggests it is watched consistently by a smaller but more loyal audience - which is evidenced by some of the posts here.

GB News said it had 87,700 average viewers between 6am and 2am in December 2025 - which isn’t a huge amount for any channel from a population of 70 million people.

pressgazette.co.uk/media-audience-and-business-data/media_metrics/gb-news-viewing-figures-2025-sky-bbc/

2025 polling suggested that GB News is the least trusted of the five main news broadcasters in Britain. While it was the only one with a negative net trust (-15), weekly visits by GB News viewers exceeded those visiting Channel 4 News.

It’s a very strange dichotomy - an award winning news programme on the least trusted news channel. It doesn’t make sense to me to go to an untrustworthy channel for news at any time of day.

I rail at some BBC presenters for their obvious bias. I played the “what does AI say about me on Gransnet” game yesterday. It said I am a sharp critic of mainstream media figures like Chris Mason and Laura Kuenssberg. This it true (and add Fiona Bruce to those two) but theirs is commentary and opinion on the news not the news itself. I still prefer the BBC for news coverage presented by Clive Myrie, Sophie Raworth, Reeta Chakrabarti, Victoria Derbyshire, Faisal Islam, Matthew Amroliwala, Christian Frasier etc. I simply don’t understand how Farage could be voted Best News Presenter two years running in 2023 and 2024 when we have professionals of this quality.

mum2three Fri 26-Jun-26 15:12:19

Another fan here. I watch BBC news just to get the headlines, then over to GBNews for the in-depth discussions others avoid.

Emeraldforest Fri 26-Jun-26 15:14:13

No they support Reform so absolutely no way.So fed up with the right wing stranglehold of the media.

Primrose53 Fri 26-Jun-26 15:20:11

Far better to watch the BBC which used the likes of Jimmy Savile, Huw Edwards, Jonathan King etc. That is a hotbed of pervs and paedos.

Well if that isn’t sneery (and patronising) I don’t know what is! đŸ€Ł

NotSpaghetti Fri 26-Jun-26 15:40:35

Graphite thank you for looking that up. Especially 🙄 about the factual awards!

AGAA4 Fri 26-Jun-26 15:42:58

Does GB news have "in depth discussions" about Farage's 5 million given to him by a foreign business man wanting to create a crypto hub in the UK?

Maremia Fri 26-Jun-26 15:45:36

May I check something? If the award was for 'programme' then is the wording of the OP incorrect?

Yes, it is. Here’s the full list of TRIC Award winners.

Thanks Casdon.
A programme on GB News has won an award, but GB News is NOT the winner of best news channel.

I think they all think we like NF if we watch GB news.
Myself I prefer the Tories. I know they have also made mistakes before anyone tells me so.

Primrose53 Fri 26-Jun-26 22:31:40

Maremia

Thanks Casdon.
A programme on GB News has won an award, but GB News is NOT the winner of best news channel.

They won the award for Best News Programme beating several others.

As I said earlier I would rather watch GB News than the disgraceful BBC who just harbour perverts, paedophiles and sex offenders.

As well as Jimmy Savile, Jonathan King and Huw Edwards there have been many others - Stuart Hall, Mike Souter, Ben Thomas, Clive Bartlett, Peter Rowell and Tony and Julie Wadsworth. Just a few more to be going on with!

Just today we have the BBC’s Hardeep Singh Koli standing trial for rape and sex offences.

Estrellita Sat 27-Jun-26 15:49:28

It's not my cup of tea.
