I am just finishing watching a BBC2 programme on Miriam Margoyles.
Such a brilliant actor of course .... but the rest if it? What do people think?

BlueBelle Tue 14-Apr-26 04:22:36

I didn’t see the programme in question but I really like Miriam, you just have to see past her tongue. She is a very clever lady and also very kind in her heart I think some of you haven’t looked beyond her swearing Yes she should curb her mouth and it’s a shame she doesn’t as she has a very sharp mind and a kind heart.
I really enjoyed her Australian series

A repeat screening of ‘Miriam Margolyes in New Zealand’ appeared on screen here just this past Sunday. We hadn’t seen the first showing, but were aware of her reputation. We tuned in. The show was fantastic. Ms Margolyes was delightful, relaxed, friendly, engaged, interesting, intuitive and empathetic.

This program could be some years old, however, it showed her driving a camper van meeting all sorts. Yes there were one or two language slips, but nothing to seriously offend I think. We are looking forward to next week’s episode when she crosses over to ‘our’ island, the South Island.

Allsorts

I didn't watch it, I find her vulgar and crude.

Me too. She says horrible things just to shock…. No thanks!

One part of finds it slightly refreshing that she says what she thinks (and what many might think but not dare say), whilst it also becomes somewhat tedious if overdone (which it is).

Her acting skills and her empathy during her walkabout are positives. Her unrelenting desire to shock has worn a bit thin.

MM makes many inappropriate comments, however she is always kind to disadvantaged people.

I will miss her when she is gone.

I think she speaks beautifully.

My family are horrified that I watch her programmes, but I have got to an age that I make my own decisions.

I like Miriam. I find her childish ways silly but amusing. She isn't a mother so doesn't have to curb her language or actions to please anyone, only herself. She's a one-off.

Thank God for that!

We enjoyed her camper van travels - haven't seen the recent series.

Well, this won’t make me popular, I really like her, she does have a potty mouth but she’s funny (imo) and is actually very bright.

I’m off to see her at our local theatre later in the year.

I can look past the swearing and as I have IBS not well controlled, I appreciate the farting stories.

My DM loathed her for the same reasons as those of you here do.

I find her fascinating. On the one hand she is mega-talented and very intelligent. She has a good degree from Cambridge and she has won many awards for her acting. She can mimic just about any accent convincingly and has done thousands of voice overs and readings.

On the other hand she appears to be shameless and have no filter which means that she can and often does cause extreme embarrassment.

My sister worked with her and she remembers Miriam groping one of the young sound engineers who was wearing tight jeans, much to the young man's embarrassment and the discomfort of everybody else.

I was interested to hear her views on the Israeli conflict and I must say that she put forward intelligent arguments and I agreed with everything she said.

TheWeirdoAgain60 Tue 14-Apr-26 08:36:43

She did the silky voice for the Cadbury Caramel Bunny in the 1980/90s!

keepcalmandcavachon Tue 14-Apr-26 08:42:04

She's certainly a one off! The type of wise, kind and very naughty great aunt that small people would adoregrin
I like her.

rafichagran Tue 14-Apr-26 08:49:08

I agree with Bluebelle other than saying she should curb her tongue. Why should she?

I go on Mumsnet, the C word plus other expletives are everyday language for some, it's accepted in a way it is not here. I have worked in pubs and the swearing was rife, generally by men, they relaxed with a drink and did not have to watch their language. I suspect people don't like it because she is a older women swearing.

She was also one of the PG Tips chimpanzees.

I couldn’t get tickets 🤬

I loved her series from Australia.

She was good in Harry Potter. But her foul mouth and attention seeking ways puts me off. Not keen on her.

yogitree Tue 14-Apr-26 09:17:50

I think she uses vulgarity and the like as tools for further or even lack of expression. She does not offend me. My sensibilities are not so gentle.

Oreo Tue 14-Apr-26 09:26:46

She doesn’t offend me either I just find even seeing her repels me but the relentless vulgarity done for effect is tiresome in the extreme.
And btw if the story about her groping a young sound engineer is true is that supposed to make everyone laugh?

I find her vulgar and not at all funny.

If any man had admitted to groping a crew member he would be up on sexual assault charges.

Magenta8 Tue 14-Apr-26 09:51:49

The story about groping the young man is true and it was one of many similar incidents but it did happen a very long time ago when such things were more likely to be tolerated at the BBC including men touching up women.

Chestnut Tue 14-Apr-26 10:03:42

She can be very warm and friendly when travelling and meeting people but the other side of the coin is an attention seeking diva with foul habits.

So in normal situations she behaves herself quite well but put her in front of an audience and she just wants to shock everyone.

Galaxy Tue 14-Apr-26 10:08:26

She doesn't offend or shock me at all, because it is predictable as the sun coming up. I see her as utterly 'establishment' and not challenging at all.

Wonder if she'll be investigated for historical "inappropriate behaviour" like so many men have? hmm

henetha Tue 14-Apr-26 10:47:22

Vulgar and crude she is, and I wish she would grow up and curb it, - but only a bit... I find her highly entertaining.

Elusivebutterfly Tue 14-Apr-26 11:53:12

I found her most unpleasant in the TV series The Real Marigold Hotel. She was so happy at sneakily getting out of any of the shared tasks the contestants had to do and refused to share.
Even without seeing that, I did not like her style or manner. When she is acting she seems to just be playing herself.

Shelflife Tue 14-Apr-26 12:54:32

I agree , she is rude and vulgar, however............. I cant help liking her ! On the surface she is a disgusting old lady!
