I was pleased to see this was back with a new series last night but what a horrible ending.

Is this how Will is going to be written out? ☹️

Visgir1 Fri 16-Feb-24 07:44:01

I was like they had no idea how to end the series?
Wrap it all up in neat boxes, if there is another series we can start again?
All a bit crackers last night.

It was laughable.

Back in the late 50’s, or whenever it’s now meant to be set, I don’t think the new dad would be parading his new baby out in the hospital corridor for half the village to gawp at. This wouldn’t have happened when our first baby was born, and that was 1972.

The baby looked quite small at the christening, then suddenly looked much bigger when Will and Geordie were chatting, I assume not that much later as they were discussing the christening.

And as for Mrs C suddenly being transformed into Julie Andrews, complete with children marching in line behind her…. Expected them to break into ‘DoeRayMe’ or ‘Edelweiss’.

What a load of tripe. James Runcie must have watched it with his head in his hands.

It seems like they wanted to tie up all the storylines with a pretty bow and finish on a happy note, which they did. I know it was nonsense but at least it left us feeling a bit more cheerful. It has all been gloom and doom these last few weeks so it was nice to have a happy ending. Love and peace. 🧡🌈

The hospital - this is just a farce.

Calendargirl Thu 15-Feb-24 21:28:57

Grantchester even sillier tonight.

Is Cathy’s hair a wig? It never looks right somehow.

Clawdy Tue 13-Feb-24 16:43:56

Julian Barnes wrote a novel about the Edalji case - "Arthur and George".

Callistemon21 Mon 12-Feb-24 17:34:56

Yes, of course!

Staffordshire is always progressive 😁

But is Grantchester?

Conan Doyle became involved in defending a young man whose father was Asian and a vicar (I do mean CD not Sherlock Holmes)

You're absolutely right! And the father was a vicar in the 1800s.
Quote:
St Mark's is the parish church of Great Wyrley, South Staffordshire, England. It is known for having had the first South Asian vicar of any Church of England parish, Shapurji Edalji, and for its association with Edalji's son George, who was falsely convicted on a charge of injuring a pony, and cleared after the intervention of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

I lost interest when James Norton left.
(Be still my beating hear)
I wonder why?

Same here. Though I also have a soft spot for Robson Green smile

I can never feel the same about him since Happy Valley!

We don't see as much of Robson Green now either.

The minister of our local Methodist Church is Indian.

It's 2024!

Grantchester is set in the 1950s.

Hmmmm. As I feared. How many Asian ministers were there in those days in small country towns?

One, I think

I'm not sure either. There have been black vicars for a long time but I'm not sure about Asian. Most people I've known from the Indian sub-continent have been Muslim, Hindu or Roman Catholic, not C of E, although Christianity did begin in India soon after the time of Jesus and there are Anglican churches in India.

Doodledog Mon 12-Feb-24 10:30:45

How many series' have there been? Isn't this just a way of bringing in more storylines?

The programme is about the class between God's laws and the laws of the land, represented by Geordie and the various vicars, and covers women's rights (Cathy and various vicars' girlfriends) acceptance of gay people (Leonard and the disapproval of Mrs C) and so on. There have been stories about race before, as the 50s/60s were a time when the racial profile of Britain was changing, and this casting will presumably allow them to explore that more.

None of it is realistic - you could just as easily ask how many murders there were in small country towns in the 50s/60s grin.

‘Charismatic’ is not how you would describe Will this series.

Yes, this is not real, its a TV show. The reality though is men suffer severely from depression sometimes resulting in suicide.
Vicar Will is possibly one of those. No wonder he's no good to his parishioners. In those days, boys and men were looked down upon if they even uttered the word depression, told to pull their socks up and be a man. Not much better nowadays, although slowly improving.
So a TV programme showing a serious health problem, and non of it is getting through, because poor parishioners have no one, and the show is depressing !! If it had been a woman I'm sure the comments would be a lot different.

Jaberwok Sun 11-Feb-24 18:45:44

Because there was no such person in the 1950's. Women weren't ordained until 1993.

gillgran Sun 11-Feb-24 18:41:27

I must admit that I haven't found this series as good as past ones.
I keep watching as we are only 30 miles down the road from Grantchester.

Jaberwok Sun 11-Feb-24 18:41:07

Used to love this series but watched recording last night.and
oh dear, boring, tedious lack lustre and depressing! Even that poor dog looked bored and fed up! Can't think that Will is much asset to his parishioners. Won't be watching again!

Aveline Sun 11-Feb-24 08:58:02

I'm not optimistic about the next series. Woke casting always puts me off.
I like Geordie and his wife and also poor Leonard.

Calendargirl Sun 11-Feb-24 08:41:41

Oh, I realise I’m behind the times. Didn’t realise Will was really leaving, and being replaced.

Definitely time to have shut the (church) door and called an end to the series.

And Geordie retired to be a house husband, leaving Cathy to forge ahead as a career woman.
