I think Claire is acting with good intentions by taking Ryan to visit Tommy in jail, but so wrong that his guardian, Catherine is kept in the dark.
Tommy is an intelligent but warped character who had a terrible upbringing with a single mother constantly on drugs and a prostitute as well.He obviously loves having a son which is maybe cos it’s the only family he has.
I keep wondering how Sarah Lancashire remembers all her lines.

Last tango in Halifax and Gentleman Jack were also filmed around the valley and I would regularly see actors in the local shops during filming. Shibden hall, the home of Anne Lister (gentleman Jack) had a huge increase in visitors after the series was shown. My small town has been a bit of a tourist place for a while. There are more coffee shops than could be sustained by a local population. We also get a lot of hikers enjoying the amazing countryside here.

It can Sarah but thr judge can recommend a minimum sentence. If a prisoner gets parole it’s on life licence under strict guidelines. If h they breach the guidelines they’re back to prison so a life sentence is for life.

The rape was never prosecuted. His mum only told her mum when she knew about the pregnancy.

Iam64 Given the fact Tommy tried to kill Ryan’s grannie, his legal carer, direct contact via prison visits wouldn’t be the starting point.
He also brutally raped Catherine's daughter, leading to her suicide. But was that proven? I can't remember the details. He is supposed to have a life sentence so I'm not sure how or why he is planning to go abroad.

Yes, I remember this and did wonder if she’d been persuaded by Ryan to talk about his dad, then help them write, later visit.
Legally, Claire is correct. The family courts start from the premise that children have a right to know about and have some form of contact with their birth parents.
But - in a case like this, if Tommy made an application for contact, it would go to a senior Judge and a Children’s Guardian would be appointed. Given the fact Tommy tried to kill Ryan’s grannie, his legal carer, direct contact via prison visits wouldn’t be the starting point.

I like my intimidation theory - but then I like Claire and Catherine and don’t like the idea of a huge fall out.

I rewatched series 2 in preparation for 3.
This weekend, I re-watched series 1 - just because I could.
It reminded me just how terrifying Tommy is when he isn’t constrained in prison.

Why do we think Neil and Claire are taking Ryan to visit Tommy? Is it because they feel it’s less out of control if they’re involved?
Is it because they’re being threatened and intimidated by Tommy via the Eastern European gangsters?

Ooh I’m up to date now with HV! Just watched Sunday’s episode. I love all the characters and I’m totally engrossed in the storyline. I love Catherine’s deadpan responses! And when she sat down in that cafe in front of her sister. Just wow! Such a measured attack. It was a masterclass in self restraint.

This!!!!! That’s totally the plan, I couldn’t understand why he would be learning Spanish (or why he’s adopted a hairstyle like Otto the bus driver in The Simpsons). I think you’re right

I watched series 1 rather compulsively , as the acting was great ,but certain scenes still stick in my memory. James Norton is such a fantastic versatile actor, that I wanted to watch series two and 3 .I found the first episode of each so dark and was reminded of the effect the first series had on me that I didn’t continue. I must be a dreadful wimp. Did anyone else find the series disturbing?

I did find it very disturbing from the start, but it was so compelling I had to keep going. I stopped watching The Fall because it started with a gruesome rape scene which was far too close up and personal for my liking. I feel scenes like that are just sickening.

I can’t understand people who say Sarah Lancashire mumbles I think she has a loud clear voice but she does have a strong northern accent so maybe it’s the accent although I m a southerner and can understand her perfectly
I think she’s great I loved her answer when the grandson ask how she knew it wasn’t him drawing on the car…. hilarious
