I think you were watching the wrong programme!!

I like Mary Beard - she spouts posh academic stuff whilst at the same time having a sense of humour.

The "poop" artist was a hoot - he even had a clothes peg as an earring.

Probably puts it on his nose when creating art.

It was a good programme.

I quite like the more unusual stuff, although I know absolutely nothing about art.

I haven’t seen it, but I love Mary Beard so I’ll have a look.

I will come clean and say that I love the little statue of Pan and the goat. I loved the original when I saw it and would happily have it on show in my living room. After all Pan isn't even human.

I've been trying to work out what I think about the urinating/ defaecating/ vomiting film. I think that when you see drawings or paintings of these things, or Egon Schiele's masturbation drawings you can see the artist working out how something is happening. The film was just some unpleasant images with little behind it.

At least you can always rely on Mary Beard to make you think!

Thought provoking and uncomfortable. Mary Beard treated it responsibly but didn't spare the viewer; some of it I watched from behind my hand. The lecherous expression on Pan's face was worse than what he was actually doing; I certainly would not want to see that expression daily.

What struck me was that viewing of all those artefacts was restricted so it was unlikely anyone would see them without being forewarned; compare that with the some of the images available on social media today.

I prefer to watch a poo coming out than someone switching a light on and off, like they did in the programme.
At least a poo has an element of surprise to it.

Urmstonegran Mary did say it probably wasn't the sort of thing people would want on show at home.

I wasn’t querying your post, apologies if it came over that way. Certainly not my intention.

It was certainly interesting, but as for calling some of that ‘art’, I must say the Emperor’s New Clothes do come to mind.

The classical pieces, Pan and so on, are of course a different matter. IIRC from my OU courses on Homer and 5thC Athens, the old Greeks didn’t have a word for art as such - they used the word for ‘skill’, techni or something similar.

Witzend in medieval times painting and sculpture were considered a craft rather than "art" I don't think some of today's conceptual art would have cut much ice in those days!
