Edith Wharton novels of American high society are tremendously detailed on the fashions, furnishing and etiquette of the time. There are some readers nowadays who dislike this kind of writing - probably because it asks too much of the reader.
Another wonderful Wharton novel (set a little later) is House of Mirth which details the downfall of a young society woman who falls upon hard times.
