This was on Talking Pictures this afternoon, all about his life.

What a voice! What a loss!

We watched it last night too. What a lovely man he seemed. I thought he had a heart attack too Sue.

Every time he came on, tv or radio, my Dad said ‘ He used to be a bus conductor, or driver’. Drove us mad .

So did mine. ?

My dad loved Matt Monro as well. 'Days Like These' was his favourite.

My favourite too.
It was used at the start of The Italian Job ( the original.)
I could listen to his voice all day.

He used to be a bus driver, you know.
Not your dad, obviously.
(Unless he was, actually a bus driver)

Didn't he find fame by winning a talent show?

Urmstongran Sun 07-Nov-21 21:34:44

From Wiki:

“Death and legacy. Monro was a heavy smoker and battled alcoholism from the 1960s until 1981. He died from liver cancer on 7 February 1985 at the Cromwell Hospital, Kensington, London, aged 54.”

He won talent weekly shows while in the army merlotgran, the prize being cigarettes. He was spotted by Winifred Atwell and given a recording contract but it took a while for him to find fame. I hope the programme is repeated again at some point.

I’ve had constant Matt Monro ear worms since that programme. I woke to ‘Born Free’ this morning and it’s currently ‘Portrait of my Love’.grin

MissAdventure Wed 10-Nov-21 19:49:03

And just think..
He used to be a bus driver.

SueDonim Wed 10-Nov-21 20:20:56

Oh really, MissAdventure? Who knew? ??

Marydoll Wed 10-Nov-21 20:23:36

He was a East London bus driver who perfected his baritone techniques while serenading his passengers, on route 27.

SueDonim Wed 10-Nov-21 20:57:35

I don’t think I know route 27, Marydoll. Where does it start and terminate?

Marydoll Wed 10-Nov-21 21:26:19

Haven't a clue, Sue! ?

Apparently Hammersmith Grove to Chalk Farm.

I was a bit put off this sort of programme when I watched one about Bing Crosby and it said he wasn't the nice smiley man we think he was His son said he could go on a 100 mile journey with him and he wouldn't speak to him, they'd arrive somewhere and he'd get out of the car and turn on the charm for the fans. I felt really let down.

All I need now is a programme telling me Tom Hanks is a child beater or kicks puppies and my faith in mankind will be totally gone.

SueDonim Wed 10-Nov-21 21:47:47

Hmm, I don’t think I need to go to either of those places, Marydoll! grin

TheWorriedwell this isn’t a hatchet job programme, it’s lovely.smile

theworriedwell Wed 10-Nov-21 21:48:42

SueDonim, maybe I need to be brave then.

Kate1949 Wed 10-Nov-21 22:42:47

Nobody had a bad word to say about Matt in the programme.
