Well we traditionally have a thread - so I am starting one.

All mothers of contestants are strictly (!!!) barred!

I'm rooting for JJ Chalmers! (I hope that's his name)

HurdyGurdy Sat 17-Oct-20 21:34:55

Based on that group dance, I'd predict an early exit for Anton this year.

Also surprised at how nimble Bill Bailey was on his feet. I'd suspected he'd be an Anne Widdecome/Russel Grant joke contestant.

The EastEnders girl looked very good

Kandinsky Sat 17-Oct-20 21:37:04

Definitely - that’s why they paired her with Anton. He always get the ‘older woman’ with two left feet.

Spangler Sat 17-Oct-20 21:40:43

Oopsminty I shall look forward to your's and all the other critique's here on this thread. Far more interesting.

Just an aside, my wife and I had ambitions to become professionals, but there came a point when we accepted that no amount of training and rehearsing can compensate for natural talent. A retired dancer turned teacher also pointed out that even those at the top of the tree never earn what their talent is worth.

The professional dancers on Strictly earn just a fraction of the £650,000 that the late Bruce Forsyth was paid, and that's after he accepted a £100.000 pay cut.

JJ has my sympathy vote. I hope he does well. Maisie looks fantastic and much as I didn't like Harvey, he moves well. He's very cocky though. I liked Bill but I thought he was a bit clunky. He'll take direction well. The politician wasn't great.

I always record Strictly and skip through all the dross, of which there’s more every season. All I want to see is the dancing. I’ll be rooting for Nicola this year, she’s a wonderful role model and from what I’ve seen of her, a genuinely nice person. Fingers crossed she can dance a bit!

kittylester Sat 17-Oct-20 22:06:32

I love Claudia!

merlotgran Sat 17-Oct-20 22:18:05

So do I, kitty

grannyrebel7 Sat 17-Oct-20 22:21:50

Yes he dropped his vowels like you do! Can't stand all the gushing, but quite enjoy the dancing when they get down to it. I expect Caroline or Jacqui will be one of first to go. They both looked a bit awkward in the group dance at the end. The young ones always seem to do well.

I knew Bill Bailey would be good, saw him in concert and he was brilliant, played loads of musical instruments and he moved round the stage so well, and he he was so funny, he’s a very talented man.

Claudia gets right up my left nostril, and knowing that the BBC pay her £370,000 for her annoying appearance, gets right up the other nostril too.

Well I know the series is going to be different this year but even so it is good to see it back, a bit of nearly normal is going to be good. Looking forward to watching the dances, not keen on the chat or screaming though that is Strictly!

Calendargirl Sun 18-Oct-20 07:30:57

I shall watch with interest. I confess I turned over before the end to watch the start of the Beatrice/Eugenie programme so missed the group dance.

Don’t know if it’s the results of Lockdown, but it seems ages since the last series, and I had a job remembering who was who in the pros.

Did Neil get a partner, or is he just a group dancer again?

You can probably tell I wasn’t giving it my full attention.

Beauregard Sun 18-Oct-20 07:57:28

Calendargirl no he didn't. They've reduced celeb numbers this year so there are a few without a partner.

LullyDully Sun 18-Oct-20 08:21:01

I enjoyed Strictly being back despite the over hype. They could have made that last for a neater hour . It did go on a bit, rather tedious if you are not a super, super fan but just enjoy the dancing. Imo.

Hopefully we will get down to the business next week.

I thought the same Phoenix terrible!

Daisymae Sun 18-Oct-20 08:28:36

Great to have it back. Hoping for less info about bubbles and distancing next week. I was doubtful that it could work but they have done a great job of putting it together. Fingers crossed all stay well.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 18-Oct-20 08:35:56

I forgot it was on!!

ginny Sun 18-Oct-20 08:43:49

Love the costumes , music and the dancing.
Can’t stand the trying to be funny and lovey dovey bits.
I record and then watch, cutting out all the superfluous parts.

TwiceAsNice Sun 18-Oct-20 08:54:04

Have looked forward to it, we always watch as a family ( only 6) Sorry to say because it’s shorter there is no Blackpool or Halloween this year. Also was cross that after giving Anton a decent partner last year ( poor man had his first 10’s) they have lumped him once again with a dud . So unfair he’s a good dancer!

honeyrose Sun 18-Oct-20 09:00:03

I’m so glad Strictly’s back! A bit of glamour and excitement (otherwise in short supply at the moment!). I haven’t heard of many of the celebs, I must admit. Looking at the show dance at the end, it’s very obvious who has rhythm and showing potential. Amongst the males, I noticed that Max George looks good. A great mover! HRVY as well, but a bit cocky as a personality. Several of the younger females look promising too. I dislike all the silly, childlike humour of presenter Claudia. She’s a lovely person - overpaid, but lovely - but I do wish she’d have that trademark fringe trimmed slightly! One more millimetre and she won’t see through it at all. One more bitchy comment - is Shirley Ballas trying to emulate Amanda Holden with all that cleavage on show?!

Kandinsky Sun 18-Oct-20 09:01:27

Anton is in his 50’s now so probably couldn’t keep up with the really good younger dancers - he’s paired with the dud so he only dances for a few weeks. I doubt he could manage the full 10 weeks ( or whatever it is )

Sparklefizz Sun 18-Oct-20 09:04:48

TwiceAsNice Also was cross that after giving Anton a decent partner last year ( poor man had his first 10’s) they have lumped him once again with a dud.

Maybe he's asked to go home early grin. I'm pleased he's stopped dyeing his hair jet black which was looking ridiculous.

Caroline Q or Jacqui Smith will be going home early methinks.

I liked Jason Bell in his interview but didn't notice him particularly in the group dance. Was he any good?

Athletes always take instruction well and don't stand in front of the panel pouting at the comments but put them to good use, so I think Jason and Nicola will be very good. I really like Nicola - pity she is partnered with OTT Katya, but K is a very good dancer and has choreographed some amazing routines, so I expect great things.

I liked Max from The Wanted.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 18-Oct-20 09:05:52

Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sparklefizz Sun 18-Oct-20 09:06:37

honeyrose ^ is Shirley Ballas trying to emulate Amanda Holden with all that cleavage on show?!^

Shirley had them "done" last year apparently.
