I love roulades! They look amazing. My money's on Jon at the moment but the winner always takes me by surprise so I'm probably barking up the wrong tree.

And does anyone manage to watch an entire episode without reaching for a sweet snack? This program is not good for my waistline.

We have a rasperry meringue dessert from Lidl so we can eat along.
I love Rahul. Can I adopt him?

paddyann Tue 18-Sept-18 20:29:30

I much prefer this new Bake off ,great characters in it this year

petitpois Tue 18-Sept-18 20:37:35

How did you know what they'd be making Pittcity? Even your raspberry ties in with the blancmange - well chosen! Yes paddyann, I also think the characters this year are great. They seem very supportive of each other and look like they're having fun.

Watched it with a deaf old aunt , who kept asking 'Who's he?' whenever Noel came on. ( sigh ). Just loved those chocolate domes. Could have eaten every one.

Elrel Tue 18-Sept-18 22:55:03

I was amazed at the chocolate domes, has anyone had one? I didn't even know they were a thing!

I had Aldi's kir meringue roulade a week or two ago but it was unbearably sweet.
M n S have some too which are less sweet.
Not being a snacker at all, I don't feel tempted to eat as I watch!

I must admit I m not an avid fan I pop in and out when there’s nothing else on They make such ridiculous things they are so huge and over the top, those gooey chocolate things within things made me think of a drag queens hat, got to say they re clever though
The thing that I find strange is why they need/ have four presenters I think that Noel (who I ve never heard of before) seems so personality- less and although I know a lot of people like Sandy she too seems surplus
I don’t like chocolate much so I wasn’t tempted st all

Noel Fielding is lovely! He's so splendidly daft. He's very popular with a younger demographic (and me!) Obviously the producers wanted to draw in the widest possible viewing audience. It seems to me that they've done well.
Extra slice is great fun too. I love that acerbic Tom Allan. He certainly cuts through any sugariness!

I like this show because the competitors always seem genuine and supportive of each other. I not over keen on Dan, he seems much more competitive than the others.

Noel never seems very relaxed, almost as if he is not sure what his role should be. I hate that bot at the beginning because it seems so false. I loved Mel and Sue and their opening routine was funny .

shysal Wed 19-Sept-18 09:31:16

I think Noel is much more natural and funny in this series. Perhaps he is not so nervous.
Liking the competitors as usual. In the first series or two I used to think that I would be able to make most of their bakes because I had already made them, but as the programme has progressed to unknown recipes I know that I would make a mess of some of them.

I don't know why but I can't raise much enthusiasm over this latest series. I've given up on Extra Slice as it's too drawn out now and seems to have lost the edgy wit it used to have.

I love bake off!
I don't watch much tv and love it when this is on . I loved sewing bee too but that did not last long.
Nowadays though half the things they bake I've never even heard of . The one thing I always thought too fussy to make was an opera cake ..so many different layers but I bet it's yummy.
Not watched last night's yet.

henetha Wed 19-Sept-18 10:34:04

I love Bake Off and Extra Slice. What's not to like? Food, fun and great characters. Wasn't that an amazing spherical chocolate thing last night!
But it's a salivating challenge as I'm not allowed to eat cake at the moment. (pre-diabetic).

I like to record Bake off and Extra slice so I can fast forward through the adverts. I think it's them that make the programme seem so drawn out.

Jane43 Wed 19-Sept-18 19:05:46

I like Noel too. It seemed a strange choice at first but he has grown into it wonderfully and comes across as a very sweet man.

Franbern Wed 26-Sept-18 16:47:57

I do watch Bake Off, mainly as one of g.daughters love it and when she comes round we can talk about it. Record it these days, so that I can skip all the adverts. Find 'Extra Slice' is extremely 'padded out' in its new format.

Greyduster Wed 26-Sept-18 17:42:38

I watch it, but find my attention wanders, but DD was telling me this afternoon how ‘fired up’ my 11 year old GS gets about bake off. After watching some meringue creation coming together he said “Can we make that, do you think, Mum? What are we doing this weekend.” She could hardly keep a straight face! Noel is growing on me.

Day6 Wed 26-Sept-18 17:46:20

Yes, I much prefer this new Bake Off. I love Noel and Sandi. I have always liked both in former TV programmes and I think they are a good pairing - naturally warm and kind. Mel and Sue used to get on my nerves. I much prefer Prue too. Mary Berry was just too twee for me.

What fabulous creations the chocolate domes were! I loved planet turtle! I think the marking has been slightly unfair but as I haven't done the taste tests perhaps not. Am I the only one who thinks they are going to keep the young and very confident Ruby in at any cost? They are also seeing 'personality' as a programme plus methinks, which is a shame.

Flossieturner Wed 26-Sept-18 18:05:05

I hope John and Dan go soon. They are so competitive and bring an undercurrent of spite (always phrased as a joke) that I never saw in previous series.

Nanabilly Wed 26-Sept-18 18:38:48

Yes I think there is a bit of nastiness going on at times with one of the men . The younger one with a daughter called Florence can be so bitter if some ones doing better than he is. Maybe it's just the way it's edited .
The chap who went out this week , was it Terry , I was sure he would go further but hey no , he had a bad week and he's gone . The woman who went this week I did not like very much , a bit bolshy for my liking plus she has had one too many catastrophes and deserved to go. I'm not very good with the names on this series am I?
I really like the lady with the downturned mouth who looks like Dora the Explorer!! She makes some great things but the winner in my eye is the lovely little Rahul??
I love that he bakes to make friends and he's grown on me and I'm hoping that the show improves his confidence .

Nandalot Wed 26-Sept-18 19:01:27

Terry’s had a few disasters, like Karen, in previous weeks, but always managed to save themselves with one bake. I must be a bit insensitive because I hadn’t noticed any undercurrents and like all of them who are left in and will be sorry to see any of them go.

KatyK Wed 26-Sept-18 19:08:49

I'd much rather have Sandi and Noel than the very unfunny Mel and Sue. Just my opinion obviously smile

Treebee Wed 26-Sept-18 19:10:24

Loving this series, such a treat to watch. My faves are the quirky Kim Joy, breezy Briony and unconfident Rahul.
Their creativeness is inspiring. Finding Noel irritating though, and missing Mel and Sue’s humour.

annodomini Wed 26-Sept-18 19:24:00

I haven't noticed any nastiness, but maybe I'm just naive. That biscuit chandelier they had to make last night was - to my mind - ridiculous, but, all credit to the majority of them who managed to create one, especially Kim Joy who thoroughly deserved her second Star Baker accolade. Love her little gingerbread house.
