Has anyone watched this?

It was fascinating to watch the celebrities and their differing views on faith and religion and I'm looking forward to seeing how it develops.

There are umpteen books and films about the Camino.

My DS1 and his wife got together whilst walking from Burgos to Santiago with a group from the Church. Their whole wedding was based around hiking boots and the signature shells.

I haven't seen it myself, but my sister-in-law recommends the Martin Sheen story:

www.imdb.com/title/tt1441912/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_4

Most of the other films I've seen are German or French and may not be available in English. Shirley McLaine wrote a famous book about it, as did Paolo Coelho.

Thanks Tegan that’s the book that I read ( and couldn’t remember.) Oh that naughty donkey! grin

A lot of the route goes through much more of France - part of it very close to where we live.
One Saturday morning my friend and I met a couple of men in their sixties who did a section of the route each year starting again the following year where they left off. They had made a sort of trailer which they loaded with their equipment and they (being retired engineers ) had made a harness to go round the waist to enable them to pull it.
Very interesting talking to them.
I believe there is a map available which also marks the homes etc where people are welcome for a rest etc.

That's right, Welshwife.
Our first house in France was on one of those routes, from Arles. In the spring and summer we had pilgrims going along the lane at the back of our house every day.

long way from Arles isn't it?

Welshwife Mon 19-Mar-18 19:26:55

I think some people almost start at the Channel port which is why they often take a number of years to complete the pilgrimage.

Paw always wanted to go to Santiago as our wedding anniversary was 25 July, St James’s day. But the meds he was on made him very photosensitive and even younger and fitter he could not have taken the sun in July.
I avoided watching the programme in case it upset me sad

After reading JackyB's post about the Martin Sheen film, we looked on Netflix, but found another film about 11 young men from a Catholic Church who did the walk. It was very good viewing. So although we didn't find what we had started out to watch, this was a great alternative.

Oh Maw ??

Tegan2 Mon 19-Mar-18 23:46:14

What was it called Auntieflo? Maw flowers....x

Auntieflo Tue 20-Mar-18 08:37:29

Tegan. I think it was also called The Way, it came up under 'W'. I will get DH to have a look later, as he's rushing to go out now.

Luckygirl Tue 20-Mar-18 09:58:00

Maw - flowers

I hope you have other lovely things that you did together to look back on.

KatyK Tue 20-Mar-18 14:42:31

I was surprised at how grumpy the vicar was. Didn't she say at one point 'I didn't realise we'd have to walk it' confused

Auntieflo Tue 20-Mar-18 22:50:53

Tegan apologies for late reply, re 'The Way'. DH found it in Netflix and searched for The Way. When you click on it, It comes up under the heading of Footprints, The Path of your Life, and is about 10 men and their journey. We enjoyed it very much, although we did have to put on the sub-titles for most of the programme.

Tegan2 Tue 20-Mar-18 23:44:19

Thanks Auntieflo...

I only watched it last night, I found it interesting . The vicar spoke on what was tangible and what was not, she didn't tell him his hope was God.

I am amazed Debbie can keep her make up fresh.

Luckygirl Sat 24-Mar-18 17:13:50

Some of my best friends are vicars, but that blessed Kate woman gets right up my wick. And the editor has given her the lion's share of attention.

Otherwise an interesting second episode.

DanniRae Sun 25-Mar-18 08:29:45

I really enjoyed the second episode even with the vicar's constant moaning.
I was very interested in the discussions about the beliefs of "Humanists" - I never knew anything about them before and it gave me pause for thought.

lemongrove Sun 25-Mar-18 08:38:17

The vicar spoils the programme for me.Seems to be one of the ‘right on’ trendy kind, the sort who claim they aren’t religious but are touchy feely and sentimental. Not the essential qualifications needed for the job at all.
The others really do seem to be on a journey though ( in all senses) and seem to be getting something out of the experience.

Luckygirl Sun 25-Mar-18 10:08:25

DanniRae - I would count myself as a humanist and am currently doing a free online course via futurelearn about it - you might find that interesting.

Fennel Sun 25-Mar-18 10:23:25

I think they're very sensible doing the pilgramage at this time of the year, when it's not too hot.
Someone on another forum I belong to did one of the french routes in the summer and had a lot of problems - sore feet, other health problems, poor accommodation, primitive toilet facilities etc.

DanniRae Sun 25-Mar-18 10:28:46

Thank you for your reply Luckygirl - I appreciate it.

kittylester Sun 25-Mar-18 10:40:23

I'm still loving it and intend to rewatch it later on without DH chuntering through it! grin

Debbie McGee has impressed me as I didn't expect to like her. I'm not too keen on Heather Small or the vicar.

Ed Byrne has always made me laugh and I am really appreciating his take on life.

Jane10 Sun 25-Mar-18 20:00:27

Just caught up with this. I was interested as SiL did it a couple of years ago. He did it a a sort of lads outing. I wasn't really aware that it made any sort of spiritual impression on him though.
That vicar woman is a liability! It's only her opinions that count and she reframes what others say to make them fit her views. That lipstick of hers is ridiculous.
Ed Byrne and Neil Morissey come over well. And that poor soul in prison for 12 years for something he didn't do shock! Amazing how calm he is.

tessagee Mon 26-Mar-18 20:06:29

Jane10 I agree with all your comments especially with regard to the female vicar. I am sure there are very many more vicars who would have been far better suited to making this pilgrimage. What a pity they didn't get the chance to take part.
