Perez is stepfather to Cassie, but brought her up when her Mum Fran died. Duncan was at the time separated from Fran. He is Cassie's biological Dad; but because Perez brought her up, she calls him Dad.

I'm looking forward to the conclusion too. I think it has been very successful in maintaining interest and suspense throughout six episodes - quite an achievement.

Radio Times: Duncan is the birth father to Perez’s step-daughter Cassie. The two mostly co-parent but the situation has caused tension in the past.

Please don't kill off Perez and please can we see him (D Henshall) in something else too - so watchable.

The TV series is based on Ann Cleeves's characters but takes liberties with the background and timeline. Though the adaptation is good, the books make great reading - even without Doug Henshall!

I absolutely agree that the books are excellent, even without the eye candy!

Bit cheeky this but could one of you give me a brief outline of what happened in last week’s ep isode please? My niece lives in France and forgot to tape it, she cannot get iplayer.

It has actually finishedme off! as far as memory goes, my mind is in a zen like state.

Detective Jimmy Perez’s purposeful stare gets turned up to “angry and implacable” as he finally discovers what really happened 23 years ago.

Shetland siren Lizzie was murdered and poor lost soul and entirely innocent Tommy Malone spent 23 years mouldering in prison for the killing. He’s taken to wandering around the island, headphones clamped over his ears, as he circles his own private hell trying to ignore the hostile words and stares of a community that can’t forget.

And what of journalist Sally, who was involved in potentially dangerous inquiries into the activities of the Norwegian Far Right? The two cases bump and collide throughout as Jimmy (Douglas Henshall) must also counter the knuckled-headed interference of that high-handed Glasgow detective.

There are some tense, moving scenes as Jimmy unpeels big secrets wrapped up in guilt and lies. What emerges is monstrous.

SUMMARY
Troubled by historical DNA evidence results, Jimmy has to face the fact that Duncan may have been involved in Lizzie Kilmuir's murder, and potentially Sally McColl's as well. A shocked Duncan is brought to the station for questioning, hurt that Perez would even think him capable of murder. However, the detective knows Duncan's lying - perhaps not about the murder, but about something else significant. So when Duncan finally admits he had an affair with Donna, it's not long before a bombshell is dropped. Last in the series.

This is what happened in Episode 5

It’s a crucial episode in Jimmy Perez’s investigation into who killed journalist Sally and, all of those years ago, Shetland siren Lizzie. Jimmy (Douglas Henshall) stares into the past, and doesn’t like what he sees. But the evidence is there, and he must think the unthinkable. It’s the penultimate chapter of the story and you’ll hope Jimmy’s suspicions are off the mark.

In the present, Jimmy and Tosh (Alison O’Donnell) are still in touch with their Norwegian counterparts about the far-right connection to Sally’s murder. But enquiries are thrown into the air with the arrival of the men and women of the murder investigation team in Glasgow, who arrive with their narrow minds and fixed ideas.
SUMMARY
Following Jo's assault, the team is devastated. While Sandy feels guilty for not protecting her more, Jimmy tries to keep everyone focused, but pressure mounts on him to re-arrest Malone. However, in the absence of evidence, Perez resists. Adding to his stress, DI Cole and DS Jackson from the MIT arrive and begin picking holes in his investigation. Stunned that a search of Malone's farmhouse has not been carried out, Cole and Jackson conduct their own. However, when they arrive, Malone is nowhere to be seen.

No, so sorry, I clicked on the wrong episode. There was a list but the episode at the top was the final one. There's me thinking that it was the last one shown on TV. It wasn't until I'd posted it that I realised.

DH just said "Is there anything on the tv tonight"
but before I could answer he said "Oh yes, Sh*tland"

I said, well, I'm watching it anyway!

What a sad end for Thomas Malone, was it a cardiac arrest caused by a load of tablets he'd swallowed before going to kill Duncan?

good episode though Elrel kept me in my seat anyway.I have enjoyed this series and pleased to hear there will be another next year .

Yes, it has been very good. I was sad it ended the way it did for Thomas, too. Looking forward to the new series next year.

It was very good but very sad too. It would have been nice to have a little cheer to relieve the gloom but I suppose it was unrealistic to expect a happy ending. Judging from what I've read about miscarriages of justice, people who have been stuck in prison for years for something they didn't do often seem unable to get their lives back on track.

I thought this episode was extremely moving. The acting, especially Doug Henshall, was amazing.
