Is anybody else eagerly awaiting the finale next week?
My guess is that Duncan is Alan's father and that's why he doesn't want his daughter striking up a relationship with his daughter

Teetime Wed 21-Mar-18 09:31:42

Such a sad ending poor wee man! sad

yggdrasil Wed 21-Mar-18 08:00:36

I did. I suspected Donna for the last three episodes, despite the red herrings. She was the one with a real motive.
And Drew was also too corrupt not to be found out

ninathenana Tue 20-Mar-18 23:43:29

Well I didn't see any of that coming !
After being totally befuddled last week it was great to see it all make sense at last.

Cheesey Tue 20-Mar-18 23:22:06

I thought this episode was extremely moving. The acting, especially Doug Henshall, was amazing.

Eloethan Tue 20-Mar-18 23:12:56

It was very good but very sad too. It would have been nice to have a little cheer to relieve the gloom but I suppose it was unrealistic to expect a happy ending. Judging from what I've read about miscarriages of justice, people who have been stuck in prison for years for something they didn't do often seem unable to get their lives back on track.

Mapleleaf Tue 20-Mar-18 23:10:10

Yes, it has been very good. I was sad it ended the way it did for Thomas, too. Looking forward to the new series next year.

paddyann Tue 20-Mar-18 23:05:09

good episode though Elrel kept me in my seat anyway.I have enjoyed this series and pleased to hear there will be another next year .

Elrel Tue 20-Mar-18 22:17:08

What a sad end for Thomas Malone, was it a cardiac arrest caused by a load of tablets he'd swallowed before going to kill Duncan?

Jalima1108 Tue 20-Mar-18 20:00:21

DH just said "Is there anything on the tv tonight"
but before I could answer he said "Oh yes, Sh*tland"

I said, well, I'm watching it anyway!

hildajenniJ Mon 19-Mar-18 20:54:05

No, so sorry, I clicked on the wrong episode. There was a list but the episode at the top was the final one. There's me thinking that it was the last one shown on TV. It wasn't until I'd posted it that I realised.

lemongrove Mon 19-Mar-18 20:33:04

Spoiler there hilda? are you sure you didn’t have a glass or two as well? grin wine

Jalima1108 Mon 19-Mar-18 19:58:09

Thank you so much for your help hildajenni. It is reassuring to know that some on here at least know what day of the week it is.
grin
I did think that Michael Portillo and Shetland were on the tv tonight!

Alima Mon 19-Mar-18 19:49:11

hj, you are a remarkable human being! Many thanks!

hildajenniJ Mon 19-Mar-18 19:38:20

Ooh sorry, that's the final episode.
This is what happened in Episode 5

It’s a crucial episode in Jimmy Perez’s investigation into who killed journalist Sally and, all of those years ago, Shetland siren Lizzie. Jimmy (Douglas Henshall) stares into the past, and doesn’t like what he sees. But the evidence is there, and he must think the unthinkable. It’s the penultimate chapter of the story and you’ll hope Jimmy’s suspicions are off the mark.

In the present, Jimmy and Tosh (Alison O’Donnell) are still in touch with their Norwegian counterparts about the far-right connection to Sally’s murder. But enquiries are thrown into the air with the arrival of the men and women of the murder investigation team in Glasgow, who arrive with their narrow minds and fixed ideas.
SUMMARY
Following Jo's assault, the team is devastated. While Sandy feels guilty for not protecting her more, Jimmy tries to keep everyone focused, but pressure mounts on him to re-arrest Malone. However, in the absence of evidence, Perez resists. Adding to his stress, DI Cole and DS Jackson from the MIT arrive and begin picking holes in his investigation. Stunned that a search of Malone's farmhouse has not been carried out, Cole and Jackson conduct their own. However, when they arrive, Malone is nowhere to be seen.

REVIEW
by Alison Graham
Detective Jimmy Perez’s purposeful stare gets turned up to “angry and implacable” as he finally discovers what really happened 23 years ago.

Shetland siren Lizzie was murdered and poor lost soul and entirely innocent Tommy Malone spent 23 years mouldering in prison for the killing. He’s taken to wandering around the island, headphones clamped over his ears, as he circles his own private hell trying to ignore the hostile words and stares of a community that can’t forget.

And what of journalist Sally, who was involved in potentially dangerous inquiries into the activities of the Norwegian Far Right? The two cases bump and collide throughout as Jimmy (Douglas Henshall) must also counter the knuckled-headed interference of that high-handed Glasgow detective.

There are some tense, moving scenes as Jimmy unpeels big secrets wrapped up in guilt and lies. What emerges is monstrous.

SUMMARY
Troubled by historical DNA evidence results, Jimmy has to face the fact that Duncan may have been involved in Lizzie Kilmuir's murder, and potentially Sally McColl's as well. A shocked Duncan is brought to the station for questioning, hurt that Perez would even think him capable of murder. However, the detective knows Duncan's lying - perhaps not about the murder, but about something else significant. So when Duncan finally admits he had an affair with Donna, it's not long before a bombshell is dropped. Last in the series.

There’s me thinking you lot would help me out and all I discover is that you are either bewildered (Jalima) or rat-arsed (Lemon). Have to watch the bloomin’ thing now, oh bum.

lemongrove Mon 19-Mar-18 18:16:16

Well, there was a half bottle kicking about from Sunday, so we thought we would finish it off before I did the supper.
It has actually finishedme off! grin as far as memory goes, my mind is in a zen like state.

Jalima1108 Mon 19-Mar-18 18:12:28

wine on a Monday lemongrove? shock
You'll be off to the Argy Bargy next!
although, as I have been spring-cleaning, perhaps I deserve just a teeny glass or two .....

I'd tell you Alima, but I'd get it all wrong (again)

lemongrove Mon 19-Mar-18 18:09:03

I would tell you, but have had a tiring day and just had a large glass of wine.wine ?

Jalima1108 Mon 19-Mar-18 18:04:19

Alima Mon 19-Mar-18 17:57:37

Bit cheeky this but could one of you give me a brief outline of what happened in last week’s ep isode please? My niece lives in France and forgot to tape it, she cannot get iplayer.

Luckygirl Thu 15-Mar-18 10:47:34

I absolutely agree that the books are excellent, even without the eye candy! grin

annodomini Thu 15-Mar-18 10:34:52

The TV series is based on Ann Cleeves's characters but takes liberties with the background and timeline. Though the adaptation is good, the books make great reading - even without Doug Henshall!

Teetime Thu 15-Mar-18 10:04:44

Please don't kill off Perez and please can we see him (D Henshall) in something else too - so watchable.
