I have looked through the double edition of the Radio Times to see if there is anything I particularly want to watch or record. I have to say it seems like a load of cr*p! The only programme I will definitely see is the Cornley Polytechnic Society's A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong. Last year's Peter Pan Goes Wrong was brilliant, I laughed until I cried!
Is there anything you are looking forward to watching?

It's a two part dramatisaton of a book by Jessie Burton, Overthehills. A reading group favourite, which all my group at least really enjoyed.

I'm a Motherland fan too, Tegan. I had to watch one episode twice, it was so funny, if a bit close to home - the one where the in-laws came to "help". grin

Overthehills Tue 19-Dec-17 22:43:28

Maigret, Upstart Crow, Little Women, Christmas Carol.
No soaps.
What is The Miniaturist please?

Tegan2 Tue 19-Dec-17 20:45:05

Another one looking forward to The Miniaturist [difficult one to spell/say, that]. Years ago they used to show a film called 'The Last Winter' terribly sad but quite beautiful, a typical American/Canadian rite of passage film. Agree about the Vietnam War series, kircubbin; I've always been a fan of the Ric /Ken Burns documentaries. Want to introduce DD to Upstart Crow [never has time to watch tv]. Wish there was a Motherland Christmas special [maybe next year?]. And I'm missing last years 'Dickensian', although perhaps, because it was so brilliant, it would have been difficult to do another series as good. Taking my copy of The Highway Rat to DGD's on Friday; she wasn't keen on the book when I read it to her but perhaps, now it's on tv she'll like it. May get the boys to watch the Wizard of Oz dvd as we're going to see Oddsox perform it in February. Somehow got to fit in a visit to the cinema to see the Man who Invented Christmas#it'sallgo

Call the midwife ( sorry teatime), little women sounds good....also I see 'dads army 'is on lol, love them

acanthus Tue 19-Dec-17 19:29:31

No Teetime - you are not alone in finding 'Call the Midwife' dire. I can't abide seeing actresses in the throes of childbirth at the best of times, but surrounded by all those prissy midwives and the likes of Jenny Agutter and Judy Parfitt trying to look saintly in their nun garb.... ugh! Also agree with you about 'Harry Potter' - I always recommend Philip Pullman to aficianados of J K Rowling - just to see what a good and original writer he is...falls on deaf ears though.

What else could we expect when you realise the talent we have lost over the past years .Liz Smith in the Vicar of Dibley together with Caroline Aherne in the Royle Family and the irreplaceable Victoria Wood to name but a few.

pollyperkins Tue 19-Dec-17 18:31:16

I'd like to watch or record the miniaturist too

pollyperkins Tue 19-Dec-17 18:30:13

When is Christmas Carol goes wrong ? And what channel? Can't find it!

sarahellenwhitney Tue 19-Dec-17 18:29:35

Shysal Agree. What a load of **** we are expected to watch.
My mountain of recordings I never thought I would ever get round to watching will come in very handy.

KazzaK Tue 19-Dec-17 18:20:36

Victoria and the Minaturist. Got lots of tv recorded on Sky and have Netflix and Prime. Also will be watching My Cousin Rachel, been saving that one for the holidays.

TerriBull Tue 19-Dec-17 16:26:36

Just to bring down the tone a couple of notches, granddaughter and I are sitting on the sofa watching the third in the Nativity series "Dude Where's My Donkey". Well she likes it, fresh from doing her school nativity paly.

humptydumpty Tue 19-Dec-17 16:10:30

Is that the Ashes series we just lost, newnanny?

newnanny Tue 19-Dec-17 15:34:02

I love sport so will be recording and watching every minute of the Boxing day Ashes and watching it in-between visitors. Football too. Not else takes my fancy so will be watching box set of Poldark.

Usually spend more time over Christmas with the videos-yes, videos!-or CDs of seasonal favourites. Have just acquired, "Polar Express", puzzled that it's not on TV except Sky (which I can't receive) until I discovered that Sky have bought it. Meanies! It'll join,"Blackadder's Christmas Carol"."Scrooge","First Snows of Winter", "White Christmas" and "It's a Wonderful Life". Favourite is probably,"In the Bleak Midwinter" wonderful b and w film by Ken Branagh of a group of hams producing Hamlet in a church hall. Marvellous cast, terrific film!

W11girl Tue 19-Dec-17 13:07:34

Christmas carols from my ipod first thing on Christmas morning. Followed by Paul O'Grady on radio while preparing lunch. Over the christmas period on catchup - Call the Midwife, Christmas Day edition of Eastenders and Radio 4's Dead Ringers for me. Nothing more.

kircubbin2000 Tue 19-Dec-17 12:31:41

I player line of duty. Also Marigold Hotel in cuba.Vietnam war documentary and on Sat bbc4 the brilliant Spiral returns.

IngeJones Tue 19-Dec-17 12:21:44

I am a Kindle fan. Assuming their servers don't go down, I will at least have reading to fall back on.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Tue 19-Dec-17 12:20:39

The TV will be on in the background as we'll be playing board games and quizzes after we've abused our digestive systems. I don't want a repeat of last year when I feared I might explode all over the Trivial Pursuit board. With so many of us in the house it's impossible to watch anything properly as it's so noisy. I wouldn't really have it any other way though, so cheers. wine

Lilyflower Tue 19-Dec-17 12:12:21

It all looks dire on the Christmas TV schedules and we are eating our way through 'The Crown' so there might not even be that in reserve. Oh dear. 'The Miniaturist' was a pretty ropy, PC piece of writing but it might be better dramatised. Agatha Christie will be a trot round the usual houses. 'Little Women' might be pleasant.

Champagne and chocolates then.

annodomini Tue 19-Dec-17 11:59:13

I will watch Little Women which I loved as a child - I read the whole series time and again.

Doreen5 Tue 19-Dec-17 10:56:53

The Miniaturist- if it's anything like the book it will be brilliant.

Bluecat Tue 19-Dec-17 10:48:46

The Miniaturist and Little Women. Family will want to watch Dr Who and Call The Midwife. Apparently the latter is set during the Great Freeze of 62/63. I’m preparing to annoy everyone with my memories of walking to school in the snow...

EmilyHarburn Tue 19-Dec-17 10:47:30

I was disappointed in how little I found to watch. I put the
Queens speech in my diary and Little Women and the 3 scientific institution lectures starting Boxing Day.

IngeJones Tue 19-Dec-17 10:46:46

Oh I might make an effort to see Little Women. I haven't read that book or seen any movie of it since I was a young kid.

Terrystred Tue 19-Dec-17 10:40:28

Seen it, so funny my stomach ached from laughing!
