New ones are few and far between these days, but I was brought up with Flanders and Swan - posted the YouTube link to 'The Gas Man Cometh' on a different thread this morning. I also remember Terry Scott's 'My Bruvver' with great affection:

I played this to school children (asked permission first) on several occasions and they loved it too! Aaaah, they don't make 'em like they used to ...

Anyone else got any favourites?

merlotgran I remember the Old Dope Peddler (from The Old Lamp Lighter of Long Ago.)
I like a few Gilbert and Sullivan songs too, especially Duke of Plazatoro.
There were lots of songs from the '60s following the TV series 'That was the News That Was' that revived ironic humour.
eg Not the 9 o'clock News - My Baby Takes the Morning Train

I loved Jake Thackeray too. The Landlord song from Les Mis is also very funny.

The Indian doctor one, boom boody boom. I think it's called "Goodness gracious me."

I heard ' Hello Mother , Hello Father ...... Camp Granada ' the other day - It's always made me smile . My wee grandson's off to camp next week so it was even more poignant .

I remember my brother bringing a record of 'The Old Dope Peddler' home from boarding school.

My mother had a fit!! grin

I am just wondering if my friends and I were very strange teenagers to love Tom Lehrer so much (in preference to the pop idols of the day) grin

merlotgran Thu 24-Aug-17 20:49:47

Oh yes. Jake Thackery.

I love Sister Josephine

and others!

And 'With Her Head Tucked Underneath her Arm' (who was that?

We loved these when we were at school.

I like Jake Thackeray. His songs are very irreverent and funny. I can't post links, but "Lah-de-dah" is a hoot.
My GS had his first trip to the Tower of London last week, and I sang to him yesterday a verse of "With 'er 'ead tucked underneath 'er arm". Not sure he was that impressed! grin

Flanders and Swann
Joyce Grenfell and her monologues - the ones about the nursery always remind me of my DBF!

fiorentina51 Thu 24-Aug-17 19:54:55

I love this one by Joyce Grenfell...

This might be it...don't know why it doesn't come up blue though.

Anyone seen the one on You Tube (sorry, I don't know how to do a link) in an Irish pub, called 'Lidl and Aldi'. It's hilarious!

Almost anything by Fascinating Aida!

TriciaF Thu 24-Aug-17 14:54:08

Another one that appeals to me is Dudley Moore and Peter Cooke "Grooving the Bag Mama".
Some people think it's racist, but really it's making fun of white people's attitudes towards black people's music.
And I like several of Fats Waller's songs (probably before the time of most people on here.)

Anything by Bernard Cribbins. One about digging a hole. Also Tommy Steele, slap bang wallop. Wish they still made comedy songs. We were brought up on them.

hildajenniJ Thu 24-Aug-17 14:27:08

Don't get me started?. I used to love The Laughing Policeman, still giggle when I hear it.youtu.be/hI1nPd7hezM. Also The railroad runs through the middle of the house, sung by Alma Cogan. youtu.be/pejQAaj7MDM
Uncle Mac's Children's Favourites, on what happy memories.

The pub with no beer. A song from my childhood!

Imperfect27 Thu 24-Aug-17 12:56:47

No need to apologise Tricia ... I was hoping we would give each other some entertainment and plenty of reminders of good things and some new for me to look up here smile.

'When father painted the parlour' still makes me laugh but many many Pythons songs, including sorry about this those of a delicate disposition, 'Sit on my face and tell me that you love me' and the unforgettable 'Eric the Half-bee' which I think might have been more of a tone poem.
