Eden

I have not watched Eden, but have read about it in the newspapers. Seems to me that yet again a reality show with people chosen for their disagreeable character traits.
I remember Castaway 2000 with Ben Fogle, and how supportive and steady many of the people on there were. That was a remote cold place too. Made a lifelong star out of Ben Fogle and no one was told his parentage until the end. Much more interesting television.

I think most of the young women seem quite pleasant and sensible, and a couple of the men seem OK. The behaviour of the other men has degenerated and I think the women are justifiably feeling intimidated. I wouldn't have said at the outset that any of the characters were particularly disagreeable so I'm not sure it's right to say they were chosen for their unpleasantness.

I watched, and enjoyed, Castaway. I believe there was some sort of disagreement with one person who left. From my recollection, Ben Fogle, was a bit of a peacemaker and to some degree lent an air of calm.

I think the people who come out best in these kind of reality show experiments are those with practical skills. They are often able to placate the group by getting on with jobs and improving the conditions. There was recently a similar programme with a group of misfits on an Italian vineyard and the usual bickerings soon kicked in. It takes a calm, sensible person to step forward.
I think it's silly to pick people just for their disagreeable traits to make interesting TV.
