It's impossible not to leave ( or contribute to the leaving of) a carbon footprint living in a modern society. That doesn't make us hypocrites - I think driving a gas guzzling car whilst pontificating about the issue would be hypocritical but driving a car no bigger than you need for essentials like getting to work or helping with childcare is not hypocritical. But look at the fleet of cars that PC owns, drives and is driven about in - that's hypocrisy.

Well that includes just about all the political elite worldwide! Would a president be any different? I very much doubt it!!

Niggly, it was an attack on me for something I posted on a politics thread, naturally what she claimed was said - wasn't said and what was said she twisted.

Oh I see annie. I won't hold my breath for an answer! People rarely reply when challenged if unable to quantify!!!

Her family didn't appear to give her much help. Wouldn't mind betting the protection officer was bumped off? I wonder what will become of them once the Queen has gone?

Her fa ily did support her, one sister took on the task of being lady in waiting when the official one's left. Her brother agreed to let her have a house on his estate because she wanted somewhere to escape to . When he told her she couldn't have the house she wanted because it could be seen from the road so would bring the photographers but he would find another one she threw a hissy fit , that house or nothing. She stopped speaking to him and it sadly was like that whrn she died. She had also fallen out with her sister, her mother, sacked Mrs Burrel, who had been very loyal, because Mrs Burrel wanted to work less hours so she could spend time with her own children, she had fallen out with Fergie too

Barbara Barnes was dismissed because D felt that her sons preferred their Nanny to her!! Poor girl was very troubled/neurotic, and must have been able extremely difficult/impossible to live with virtually from day1 !

I haven't forgotten that her brother was very good at castigating the royal family while being utterly vile to his own anorexic wife.

Who ever you are it's very difficult to overcome the dysfunctional family you were born into.

She accused Tiggy publicly of being pregnant, Diana was jealous of the closeness between her sons and Tiggy. There was a discussion on suing her.

Yes, Earl Spencer was vile to his first wife, both in public and in private poor girl, driving her into a complete breakdown! He did behave very badly at D's funeral; it wasn't the time or place to air his views or have a pop at the royal family. Undignified and totally uncalled for particularly in front of her grieving young sons.

Let's face it - none of our monarchs has been perfect although Elizabeth II is as near as you will ever get I think!

So - if we prefer the status quo of the monarchy rather than a presidential system we are supporting the institution rather than the person who is the monarch at any particular time.

George Vth and V1th were very popular, as was Edward V11th for all his extra marital adventures. He was known as 'Good old Teddy'. Victoria was very well loved when she died, less so after the death of Prince Albert when she shut herself away in excessive mourning!
I just remember when George V1th died, it was considered a tragedy as he was loved and respected, and still relatively young, and his daughter, very young and very untried.

I think that if the morals of some of them were to be examined by today's standards and trial by media as happens today, George Vth in particular would be found wanting!

There was more of a reverence for 'King and Country' in those days!

Sorry - not George V (although I don't know that much about him) I was thinking of Edward VII!

Oh yes, I would think he'd be drummed out of town today! He was, however, a very charming man by all accounts, and had the common touch which endeared him to the population at large! I have a postcard with a photo of Edward V11th sent to my grandmother by one of her sisters, and on it she's written, 'Isn't he gorgeous'!!! clearly a fan!!
George Vth collected stamps was crucifyingly dull and terrorised his two elder sons!! which of course the general public knew nothing about, and would probably approved of anyway in those far off days!! He was however very popular particularly in WW1 visiting the troops in the trenches, and showing genuine concern for their welfare. Edward V111th as P of W was immensely popular as he cut such a dashing figure. After the abdication, apparently the general feeling was that Mrs Simpson was totally to blame! and 'pinched our king'! We now know differently of course!

Skweek1 I'm with you mostly. However I did feel sorry for Diana and Charles. He had to have a wife, young and virginal. She was just too young and impressionable. They both lied to put their own story across. All tragic. Too late now.

I remember the day George VI died. My mother was in tears and dragged me up to the phone box on the corner so that she could ring her mother's neighbour and talk to her mother about it! Can't imagine anyone going to all that trouble today.

I was nine when George V1th died, and I remember everyone was very upset. The king had died and it was dreadful, a catastrophe!
Scandal about George Vth?!!! There was none, he was far too dull and very dutiful, as was Queen Mary!!

I was five when George VI died. We were staying with my grandparents just before travelling out to Malta for Dad's RAF posting. I remember standing in the sitting room by the radio and listening to the announcement. For some reason, nobody sat down.

When we returned to England in 1954, I joined the Brownies. I remember the little handbooks we were given altered to 'do my duty to God and the King - Queen was written in pencil over the crossing out.
