The media chose to show only Diana but there does exist footage of Charles standing with her and hugging the children. She raced on ahead of him with the usual - look at me,when boarding the ship - whilst he thanked those who were waiting to see them aboard and then joined his family.

That dotting mother act was so annoying, she put those children through hell

I agree with merlot that the Diana scene was probably staged to imply what a wonderful, affectionate mother she was. Unlike Queenie, of course.

I cannot help but feel sorry for Charles. I think he's a sensitive, intelligent and well-meaning man who's not afraid to embrace controversial causes and to clash with his ultra-conservative mother. If he ever becomes King, I think our Monarchy will be very different, if indeed, it survives at all in any recognisable way.

Deedaa I agree. My mother was not a demonstrative parent either, but I remember her being shocked at the way Charles was treated as a small child having to wait in line. So different to Diana all those years later running up the gangway to sweep her two boys into her arms!

The post I painstakingly typed last night seems to have got lost. So here goes again, even in those days she was seen as a distant mother. I remember my mother (not the most demonstrative parent) being shocked by the way poor little Charles had to wait in line to shake hands with her.

I see queenie as a damaged woman too, she does seem a cold fish . Imagine being trained by queen Mary ! all her children were screwed up.

The bit about the Queen and Prince Philip living in Malta was an eye opener because I think it has been rather swept under the carpet that she left Charles when he was just a baby to go abroad for a long period for something other than official duties. She did the same after Anne was born.

She did return to London when Philip's ship was at sea but was still absent for six to eight weeks at a time - even at Christmas.

Hard to understand really but in those days the Royals were very distant parents.

After the breakup of the marriage between Charles and Diana, I remember reading a psychotherapist's take on the situation, and he said it would never have worked because both Charles and Diana were "looking for mummy" and were "needy children". Diana's mother had run off and left the children when Diana was 6, and Charles had a closer relationship with his nanny and grandmother than with his mother.

I started a last night beginning "I d " which was going to be "I didn''t watch the program, as I have little time for any of the royals......" Merlotgran, she toddled off to Malta , not on state duty and left her son at home, sorry but I think using - she had her duty, doesn't excuse her , I realy do think she is a cold person

I think the Queen was so overwhelmed by the duty thrust upon her at a young age that she didn't realise how distant she was becoming from Charles and Anne. She tried to make up for it later when Andrew and Edward were born.

I can't criticise her for putting duty before motherhood. She had a heck of a lot on her plate and her own mother was only too happy to step in.

Yes, Charles seemed much closer to his Grandma than his Mother didn't he?

I have watched the series, it was interesting and gave an understanding of Charles, queenie was a cold woman in my opinion.

We've watched the whole series. Not a lot we don't already know but I agree, Roses, interesting viewing.
