I think that if I had young children I would not have had the courage to resist the Nazis. But might/would have given it a go if I was young and single

paddyann Sun 26-Feb-17 21:11:19

found it a bit slow last week I'll stick with it and see how it developes,so far its a poor imitation of The Man In The High Castle

rosesarered Sun 26-Feb-17 21:11:55

It's something that we cannot know, but we would like to think so.I thought the first episode was very good, am recording a few together then we can have a marathon binge on it.The sound wasn't great, but they have promised to tweak that for the next episode, hope they do.This is based on the Len Deighton book, but I liked the ( similar) book by CJ Sansom better.

Alima Sun 26-Feb-17 21:13:05

Having another go with it. The lead actor reminds me so much of Simon Williams in Upstairs Downstairs I can barely concentrate.

whitewave Sun 26-Feb-17 21:13:34

I think it is excellent - and for those recording - the sound is definately better.

Alima Sun 26-Feb-17 21:15:56

Yes, roses, Dominion, I enjoyed that. Never read any Len Deighton. As DH likes him always thought they would be too spy like for me.

Leonora47 Tue 28-Feb-17 12:27:52

I enjoyed this enormously, but it is following the trend for filming everything in half- light or even total darkness. For minutes at a time, the screen was dark, and faces emerged from the gloom. All very sinister of course, but tricky when everyone is wearing uniform, or dark evening dress.

ninathenana Tue 28-Feb-17 12:55:03

H and I weren't impressed.
I often find subtitles dissapear too quickly to read and digest properly. So we won't bother again.

grannylyn65 Tue 28-Feb-17 13:14:40

Me neither!

GillT57 Tue 28-Feb-17 13:21:30

Watched this with great anticipation but seriously disappointed. Do not like the actor playing male lead ( Sam Riley?), do not find him credible as a very senior detective. I get seriously irritated by the way he whispers everything, not bceause I can't hear it, I can, but because nobody talks like that, all husky whispers. I can hear the other actors ok. I think I was expecting an older, more rugged looking actor as the lead, maybe I have got an ideal picture in my mind, someone like Ken Stott as Rebus perhaps. Sam Riley just looks too young, and not credible as part of this underground old boys network that appeared in this week's episode.

Ilovecheese Tue 28-Feb-17 14:49:37

Can anyone tell me who was the man who had been killed in the detective's bombed out house?

grannylyn65 Tue 28-Feb-17 15:12:30

Agree GillT

GracesGranMK2 Tue 28-Feb-17 15:26:24

I will keep trying as I found the book a good read (can't say enjoy, I seems inappropriate) but I find this too dark and too tidy. The people in it have just lost a war but they look so neat. I do find the now standard mumble stops me getting involved too.

rosesarered Tue 28-Feb-17 17:17:31

Ilovecheese the man was the young policeman who had been helping Archer look for the one armed resistance man ( they found his house and went through his things.)
They killed the young policeman and hung him in Archers old bombed out house as a message to Archer.
I am just managing to hear Archer, he does have a raspy voice, the old Scots sergeant is totally 'scrambled' I only get the odd word here and there, but everyone else is clear as a bell( even with German accents!)Especially Huth the SS man, who speaks very clearly.
It's very atmospheric, but I agree with the poster who says that the actor playing Archer is not right for the part, it needs someone who looks older, in some shots he looks about 25.

Christinefrance Tue 28-Feb-17 17:50:06

I agree roses, Archer looks far too young at times, but dishy nonetheless.
I had problems with the dialogue, atmospheric it may be but I want to hear what is being said.

Thank you

Well, not much less confused
(I really should have watched from the beginning)

Is there a second book to be televised or is that it?

Jalima Sun 19-Mar-17 23:39:24

a raspy voice
I have named him The Hoarse Whisperer

PRINTMISS Mon 20-Mar-17 08:17:19

Well, I just had to watch, because I was so confused. Not much better now, the dialogue could have been clearer and although I appreciate the 'darkness' was supposed to be atmospheric it was a little too black at times. I think perhaps my brain was just not in tune with what was supposed to be happening, but if there is another series I shall no doubt watch. Glutton for punishment.

joannapiano Mon 20-Mar-17 08:27:10

Len Deighton didn't write a follow-up book and according to the Telegraph this morning, no further series is planned.
DH and I enjoyed it, although he had to turn his hearing aids up. Did people really smoke so much, then?

Iam64 Mon 20-Mar-17 08:39:26

I was baffled by the amount of smoking as well joannapiano.
I managed to stay with the three episodes because I was intrigued by the fact that if we hadn't been an island, we'd have been in the same position as the rest of Europe, with Nazi flags everywhere. I feel it's in the "could have done better" camp of tv drama. Great idea for a story, good opportunity for costume and use of language but overall, a bit flakey.

Greyduster Mon 20-Mar-17 09:06:42

If that was the last episode, with no second series, it was all a bit disappointing. The story seemed underdeveloped. I was quite sad when they shot Huth - I grew to quite like him in the last couple of episodes. He was a sort of grown up version of Herr Flick in AYBS.

Jalima Mon 20-Mar-17 09:36:33

joannapiano my MIL was advised by her GP to smoke during the war 'to calm her nerves'.

I remember that many people smoked until fairly recently, pubs and social events were often a fug of smoke and clothes smelt awful after going to the pub even if you didn't smoke yourself.
My DF smoked a pipe, not cigarettes.
I think the incidence of smoking has gone down since the ban in public places.

Jalima Mon 20-Mar-17 09:40:25

I suppose we have to assume that he escapes with the atomic secrets to America then the States develop the 'A' bomb and use it.or did I get it all wrong? I didn't really watch episode 1.

Maggiemaybe Mon 20-Mar-17 09:51:20

The Science Museum website says that they estimate over 80% of men smoked just after the war and nearly 40% of women.
