The Big Painting Challenge

I'm finding the programme entertaining. It's better when the artists don't take themselves too seriously, I liked the comment from one person about her beach looking like a banana.
I certainly didn't expect Jennifer to win the public vote again, then they didn't know how she changed most of it at the last minute.
The story about the accident when the lady was in the bath ( sorry, I'm no good at remembering names) was horrendous.

I'd like to know how many people voted and how many liked her. I suspect the difference between the votes is very small. It is interesting that Jennifer uses the same technique for all her paintings and gets praise but the bloke who does the colourful ones (David?) gets told he has to change and develop. I think the woman who had the accident is the one to watch. She takes on all the advice and uses what she has been taught. She hasn't been painting for long and I think she will really develop.

I got the distinct impression this week that the male mentor was getting a bit bored with them all! I think the female one is more effective and, on the whole, a better teacher. There was a member of the public panel who made some comment about being able to "tell that this one looks like Hastings, but that one could be anywhere". And then they voted for Jennifer, whose painting looked like nowhere and nothing. She seems neither willing nor able to keep to the brief, but is rewarded nevertheless. I think the others will take her up an alley if it happens again and give her a bit of a dusting !

I think Jennifer keeps winning the publice vote because her splashes of colour would look good on a wall. The subject (or lack of it) is probably secondary.

This series is taking me right back to Art School - I must make an effort and not just paint the way I always paint. And I must remember to step back from the painting!

I am enjoying it - I like their efforts and the mentors' ideas.
But I think the subject matter defeated them all in thus programme. I have no idea why the black lady was chucked - there was an older man there whose painting has been rubbish all along.

As a competition it seems a bit silly as the individual artists have their own styles and excellent works, as we see when they follow them painting at home. It would be better as a programme about trying to expand painters' horizons.

But there was also one with Joan Bakewell and Frank Skinner as well, which wasn't bad.

There is another art programme -I can't remember what it's called which I much prefer, as the subjects given to the amateur artists are much nicer -I think- and I like the end results much better, and it is also less edgy.

I actually quite enjoyed the programme and thought some of the mentors' ideas were quite interesting.

I wasn't particularly keen on any of the paintings. I did think that both the landscape subjects they were given were rather difficult, especially when the weather kept changing.

I wonder if Jennifer wins the public vote because her paintings are bold, don't look like anything in particular other than seeming a bit "arty" and therefore aren't so obviously the work of an amateur.

Well if it's too early to judge her how come a lady was thrown out after one picture Lazigirl

I do think it's a bit early to judge her, and possibly the public who were asked to vote saw something in the paintings that didn't show well on tv.

Totally one trick pony her interpretation of everything is the same get on the ground dont even look at what you're painting and make some slodges I like abstract but I like it to have a feel for the subject in all honesty she doesn't even look at the subject she just paints what she feels like which is splodge splodge

I only watch this programme as DH paints as a hobby, but it seems to me that Jennifer is a bit of a one-trick pony.

I do life drawing and painting and am no expert, but keen to pick up ideas from this programme. I haven't found it very interesting or inspiring so far, and not keen on mentors input, but this could be because of editing we only see snatches of the help they are giving. I really liked that Jennifer, the abstract painter, approaches the brief differently and interprets it in her own way. To me her paintings seem more alive, and not a photographic reproduction (or it would be simpler just taking a photo). I did find her use of hair a bit of a gimmick. I agree it will be interesting to see how she deals with portraiture. I wonder why Richard Coles wears his dog collar?

I thought it was a VERY Disappointing programme I didn't think one picture was worth looking at It's surely got to be fixed for Jennifer to win the public vote again it was awful and anyone could have done better than that blue splodge with some trailing hair in it (again)
The last series was much more interesting I don't think the teachers are doing them any favours at all and it really is hugely disappointing

One of the judges - the lady - commented that David's paining could have been anywhere and was not like Hastings. Well neither was Jennifer's mass of blue paint. Emperor's new clothes anybody?

This exercise was supposedly about perspective. But where was the perspective in hers? None. She has shown no talent at all in my view and I find it difficult to believe that the public voted for her again. I demand a recount!

I didn't like many of the paintings. I didn't like the blue mishmash.

But what I do see in her paintings is an emotional reaction of 'I don't want to do this!' and the result is an impression of movement away into the distance....is expressive, but not what was wanted!

No idea what she would make of a portrait. or of the animals next time. But I guess I will watch.

I agree merlotgran, I watched because my husband was interested. Bit like watching paint dry

I am hoping that when they get to the portrait painting she either uses a different technique or is shown up for her lack of fine detail.

It was just a blue mish mash......no buildings of Hastings were included, not even in an abstract way.Emperors new clothes springs to mind, and some of the judges are colluding in the idea that she is actually an artist.

The blonde who does only abstracts won again ( public vote) ! what a larf!
