It's like Last of The Summer Wine at the corner shop!
I preferred the original.

Wikipedia is only the info that's put into it. Just try coming up here and asking for a turnip. You'll get a big orange centred one. Two nations divided by a common language!!

Just found this.

Neeps/Scotto-turnips are orange inside, purple and off-white outside, and a lot bigger than what is called a turnip dahn sarf. Someone who tried the microwave-whole method with a southern turnip found that it was burned to char. The bigger neeps take 20 mins, but the little (and stronger-tasting) Anglo-turnip would take a much shorter time.

Not here christinefrance!! In Scotland a neep is a turnip and is orange.

Christinefrance Mon 30-Jan-17 17:47:40

Swedes are orange and turnips white wherever you come from I believe.

Liaise Mon 30-Jan-17 16:52:30

Yes swedes are yellow/orange colour. They are quite hard to peel and cut up but I now buy them diced and frozen from various supermarkets. So easy! These frozen vegetables are very handy especially for those with arthritis and other problems. There is a good selection available. I once nearly cut my hand off when the swede I was cutting up slipped on the board. Sorry to digress but I no longer weep bitter tears over the onions.

Neeps and white turnip

Greyduster Mon 30-Jan-17 16:41:12

Turnips are white and about the size of a cricket ball, and swedes are yellowy orange and seem to come in a range of sizes!

Ana Mon 30-Jan-17 16:30:41

It looked like a turnip to me! Swedes are bigger and whiter...I think.

Jane10 Mon 30-Jan-17 16:28:13

No no no! Turnips are orange and swedes are white!

ninathenana Mon 30-Jan-17 15:55:11

confused as Christine says turnips are white swedes are orange. Two different vegetables.
What do you call turnips oop north Harrigran ?

harrigran Mon 30-Jan-17 15:18:32

They are swedes but up north we have always called them turnips except when we were calling them narkies.

Christinefrance Mon 30-Jan-17 14:55:56

Yes I thought they were swedes too, turnips are white I think .

Auntieflo Mon 30-Jan-17 14:01:34

I thought Granville's turnips, were swedes? confused . Or do they have another regional name?

Christinefrance Mon 30-Jan-17 12:46:31

Nice to have a little gentle old fashioned humour. David J has struck the right note with this role.
It has a certain resonance for me as my Aunt lived in one if the houses opposite the shop. In fact she appeared briefly in one of the episodes with Ronnie Barker. As my Aunt died several years ago it brings back memories of my visits there.

Pittcity Mon 30-Jan-17 09:33:28

It is so bad that it's brilliant! Who knew that turnips kept smidges away?

Jane10 Mon 30-Jan-17 09:13:44

Its sort of comforting Sunday evening viewing. Reminds me of 'Last of the Summer Wine' in that lots of older character actors turn up. All familiar faces.

kittylester Mon 30-Jan-17 09:06:26

I missed it last night but I usually enjoy it. I think the delivery boy (whose name I have forgotten) is very good - like modern day Granville.

PRINTMISS Mon 30-Jan-17 08:40:32

I did not like this very much when it first started, I am not a great lover of new stars taking over old roles in remakes, but I really do enjoy it now. David Jason has done his usual, and made it his own, with the help of course of great script writing and supporting roles which could not be better. A half hour of sheer rubbish and pleasure. Thank you.
