Still Open All Hours

I missed it last night but I usually enjoy it. I think the delivery boy (whose name I have forgotten) is very good - like modern day Granville.

Its sort of comforting Sunday evening viewing. Reminds me of 'Last of the Summer Wine' in that lots of older character actors turn up. All familiar faces.

It is so bad that it's brilliant! Who knew that turnips kept smidges away?

Nice to have a little gentle old fashioned humour. David J has struck the right note with this role.
It has a certain resonance for me as my Aunt lived in one if the houses opposite the shop. In fact she appeared briefly in one of the episodes with Ronnie Barker. As my Aunt died several years ago it brings back memories of my visits there.

Yes I thought they were swedes too, turnips are white I think .

They are swedes but up north we have always called them turnips except when we were calling them narkies.

Turnips are white and about the size of a cricket ball, and swedes are yellowy orange and seem to come in a range of sizes!

Neeps and white turnip

Yes swedes are yellow/orange colour. They are quite hard to peel and cut up but I now buy them diced and frozen from various supermarkets. So easy! These frozen vegetables are very handy especially for those with arthritis and other problems. There is a good selection available. I once nearly cut my hand off when the swede I was cutting up slipped on the board. Sorry to digress but I no longer weep bitter tears over the onions.

Not here christinefrance!! In Scotland a neep is a turnip and is orange.

Neeps/Scotto-turnips are orange inside, purple and off-white outside, and a lot bigger than what is called a turnip dahn sarf. Someone who tried the microwave-whole method with a southern turnip found that it was burned to char. The bigger neeps take 20 mins, but the little (and stronger-tasting) Anglo-turnip would take a much shorter time.

Wikipedia is only the info that's put into it. Just try coming up here and asking for a turnip. You'll get a big orange centred one. Two nations divided by a common language!!
