Absolutely Fabulous - the film

Just got back from seeing this film - not good!!! I was quite bored and nearly dropped off to sleep in the large lapses in dialogue, the plot is thin, the laughs aren't there. I cant recommend it.
Sadly the trailer fro Bridget Jones (3) wasn't any better.

Loved the TV series so if this is going to be a disappointment I'll give it a miss.

I thought the trailer looked good but have seen several films lately where the trailer wasn't just the highlights but showed the only good bits.

I am going on Monday, I did love ab fab on TV so I hope I love this film.

I've just been to see it and I enjoyed it! A bit slapstick and silly, which was just what I needed!

Grannyknot Tue 05-Jul-16 14:12:47

pittcity me too. And I'm looking forward to the remake of Tarzan ...smile

I was a great fan of the TV series. I thought the acting and writing were great. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, you do have to get that sort of humour, maybe be on their wavelength. I am going next week to see the film.........

Pittcity Tue 05-Jul-16 12:09:54

I'm counting the days until Finding Dory...

Sararose Tue 05-Jul-16 11:38:42

I will wait until it is on "The Silver Cinema" at The Odeon. I don't mind watching when it only costs £3!

Being a big Ab Fab fan from the good old days, this was a must see film for myself and my wife ... we went, munched through a bag of jelly babies (the covered in dust type) enjoyed a pleasant film but I could have been sitting out in the garden with a glass of chilled Sauvignon Blanc instead of walking out of the cinema at 6.30 covered in jelly baby dust ...

Went to see it last week. I too thought it was just 'a longer version of the tv show'. Very light, little plot, fairly boring and the characters began to grate.

Generally speaking, I don't think tv shows transfer well to a full length film. Though I did enjoy 'Dads' Army'. That was better than I expected.

sunglow12 Tue 05-Jul-16 10:34:12

Went to see it last night with some colleagues- very silly and I thought, a little insulting to older women at times, but quite entertaining, so probably only just worth the bother of going in my opinion.

townie Tue 05-Jul-16 10:20:48

I loathed the original - faux sophisticated and unfunny - so the thought of sitting through a longer film version 20 years on certainly doesn't appeal!

oznan Tue 05-Jul-16 10:16:59

I never liked AbFab so would not think of seeing the film.Have to say though,a similar thing with Mrs. Brown's Boys-loved the tv series but the film was a big disappointment.Seems our favourites just do not transfer well to the big screen.

Ruby lady, still go if this is the type of film you enjoy. Now you have heard all these bad reviews it will be better than you expect. People had high expectations of this film so were disappointed. Not my sort of film and I didn't follow the TV series.

rubylady Tue 05-Jul-16 03:19:22

Oh well, that's that spoiled then. I was going for my birthday, on my own as per my thread, but I won't bother now.

Enjoy it, Deedaa I was accompanied by someone "in the business" and we had great fun celeb/cameo spotting. My brow can be surprisingly low when I put my mind to it!!

Deedaa Mon 04-Jul-16 21:58:15

I "got" the programme so well that DD and friends used to call me Eddy blush I shall give it a go, I've loved the clips I've seen - appeals to my hidden shallows I'm afraid.

Jane10 Mon 04-Jul-16 17:49:55

I didn't 'get' the programme either. Just not funny or clever. Sorry.

chelseababy Mon 04-Jul-16 17:44:59

I didn't "get" the tv series. Hope oh doesn't want to see it, he is a No Lumley fan

grannylyn65 Mon 04-Jul-16 17:35:31

No, I never watched Ab Fab, thought was Ab Awful !

Grannyknot Mon 04-Jul-16 17:30:37

Just from the advance promotional clips I've seen, it didn't appeal at all.

Come to think of it, I never really thought the TV series had more than a handful of laughs shocksmile <ducks>

Marelli Mon 04-Jul-16 17:00:49

Been to see it this afternoon, and have to agree - not really very good at all. Actually, like Teetime, I did drop off a couple of times.... shock!

ninathenana Mon 04-Jul-16 16:30:34

I was put off by the reviews I read at the weekend. Thanks Teetime you saved me money smile

DaphneBroon Mon 04-Jul-16 16:07:47

A pleasantly frivolous way to spend a Sunday afternoon in what has been a gruelling 2 weeks!.
Thoroughly enjoyed spotting the celeb "cameos". And yes, it was silly, the plot is non-existent, apart from a nod to films such as "Some Like It Hot" , but what did anybody expect? Don't expect world cinema, but don't be put off either.
smile

While we're on the subject, may I tell you a funny story. Years ago, I went to see Mama Mia (film, had already seen the musical twice, love it!). Anyway, sitting in cinema, humming along, when Pierce Brosnan sang for the first time. A woman 4 rows in front started to giggle, then she started to laugh, then she doubled over. The giggling then started to filter backwards and forwards, as she was so contagious. Until a large section, including me, were in stitches. Poor old Pierce. Still chuckle when I think about it.

Oh that's disappointing. Strange though, how sometimes a hugely successful series doesn't work when a feature length film is attempted. Only Fools and Horses being similar. The weekly half hour classics, didn't seem to work when they turned them into lengthy specials. Wasn't sure whether I would enjoy it as it's a bit flogged to death but I am REALLY disappointed to hear about B.Jones 3. Was looking forward to that as loved the first 2. Thanks for the heads up.
