We watched episode 1 of this last night on telly, via iPlayer. iPlayer are now uploading entire series (they did the same with New Blood) on iPlayer prior to release on TV, to provide "box set" type of viewing for those who want it.

It will start on BBC1 on Tuesday.

Anyhow - it is good. It's the young actor who played the main role in Merlin - he's a psychologist who returns to the family farm with his new bride and encounters all sorts. It's a Victorian spook story.

Thanks for the enlightening re the vapour trail Grannyknot. I didn't manage to tie that bit in. It's all very clever.

It's not scary. It's sad. Especially the second episode, which I found almost unbearably sad.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 29-Jun-16 09:06:02

No. It's not a matter of solving individual 'cases'! It's one story continuing all the way through.

Re the modern day woman, you need to keep watching. All does get revealed, particularly in the final episode, when all loose ends are tied up. Apart from one startling and totally unexpected revelation.

You can always do what I did. Watch all the episodes back to back on I player. I'm still enjoying it in the Tuesday evening slot as well though. I'm 'getting it' more on the second watch.

S wanted to watch it but I don't "do" ghosts and supernatural.
Is it scary??

Grannyknot Wed 29-Jun-16 08:56:27

Here you go - so the person who sees the modern "visions" is Nathan the main character. smile - and us the viewers of course. It gets good reviews overall. Has a super soundtrack too.

"The Living And The Dead plays the same game. It’s a traditional Victorian ghost story with Something Else Going On. Two events in the first episode alert viewers to this fact – the vapour trail of a modern airplane in the 1894 Somerset sky and the closing sight of a twenty-first century woman, iPad in hand, walking around the nineteenth-century farmhouse in which the story is set."

Grannyknot Wed 29-Jun-16 08:47:42

carer yes, apparently so 're the woman. I think she also had an iPad! I didn't notice the aeroplane trail! But I read somewhere that those "flashes" are to show (the viewer) that time is not linear (I know!) ... but I decided to ignore that. I'll try and find the article.

carerof123 Wed 29-Jun-16 08:15:34

can anyone put me right, was the lady he saw at the end from the present day and was i right in thinking he saw an
aeroplane trail in the sky at one point in the program???

Jenty61 Wed 29-Jun-16 08:00:08

going to watch it on catch up later today I dont like being spooked before I go to bed...??

Grannyknot Wed 29-Jun-16 07:51:58

Each episode has a self-contained "case" for the main character to solve. Just like e.g. Lewis, Foyle's War, Vera etcetera. I don't understand the confusion!

I liked its Victorian ghostliness. I also like the wife.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 28-Jun-16 22:49:50

No.....! It's one story. grin

rosesarered Tue 28-Jun-16 22:35:07

I am guessing that is what Ana means.confused

rosesarered Tue 28-Jun-16 22:33:06

What are you talking about? Have just watched it, the villagers and story moves along from the first incident to a different supernatural incident.it is only ongoing with reference to the farm and his marriage etc. Each episide contains a differing ghostly story.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 28-Jun-16 22:24:19

Try watching it again. grin

rosesarered Tue 28-Jun-16 22:21:09

Each story is a different one, in terms of the supernatural content.

rosesarered Tue 28-Jun-16 22:19:54

Only ongoing in the sense that all the villagers are the same.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 28-Jun-16 22:18:48

It is an ongoing story.

rosesarered Tue 28-Jun-16 22:18:36

If two residents are killed off every week there will no village left by the end of the series.

rosesarered Tue 28-Jun-16 22:17:26

Nope, it's a different case every week! Who would live in that Somerset village eh?grin

Ana Tue 28-Jun-16 22:15:26

But it seemed like an episode in its own right, jingl, that's why I said what I said. I thought it was going to be an ongoing story, not just a different 'possession' every week.

rosesarered Tue 28-Jun-16 22:14:08

The second episode didn't get a lot better.

rosesarered Tue 28-Jun-16 22:12:48

Merlot.......oooh, is that a ghost in your pic?

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 28-Jun-16 22:11:59

merlot grin

Ana that's just the beginning.....

I think it's great! grin

Ana Tue 28-Jun-16 22:10:00

Oh dear! I had high hopes, but tonight's first episode was just...silly. The idea has been done much better in previous tv programmes and films.

And so easily resolved in the end! Why didn't they think of that before? grin

merlotgran Tue 28-Jun-16 22:03:58

DD has just sent me this picture of 17yr old DGD watching it. grin

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 26-Jun-16 22:00:57

I have watched all of it. I really like it. Was not sure at first but it definitely improved as it went on. Will watch again on Tuesday evenings.
