Any opinions on first episode?

Collgirl1 Wed 30-Mar-16 17:38:09

I recorded the last three episodes and they are well worth looking at again to understand the plot. I was so caught up in it all I sometimes didn't understand what was going on. Now I do!

Will 'Pine' have to go back to his "half life"?
Apparently, according to some sources, he gets to join the Secret Service. The name's Bond, James Bond. grin

Jalima Mon 28-Mar-16 22:44:31

The boy's Mother was not Sandy's wife ( they had their own children.)
The little boy who was kidnapped and rescued by Pine was Roper's little boy.

The other children belonged to Sandy and wife, but Roper told her that she had to come back and spy on Jed for him otherwise she would never see her children again. Nice.

Yes, where is all the money? Did Pine somehow manage to secrete it away into an account of his own or did the American or British governments take it?

The boy's Mother was not Sandy's wife ( they had their own children.)
What happened to all the money, Pine transferred it somewhere ( his own account?) So, not back to hotel work then.grin

I loved The Night Manager. Thought it a great serial and It kept me enthralled right up to the great twist at the end.

Five * from me !

Roper Jnr will stay with his mother and she will not have to worry now about him spending time with his father

The police were corrupt and probably in the pay of the other businessmen - an oversight by Roper who usually had every avenue under control

Not sure what will happen to Pine (back to hotel work? those of you going on holiday to posh hotels (not me) perhaps could look out for him)

What happened to Sandy and wife? At least she should get to keep the children now.

Angela had the baby (allegedly a girl)
Is her husband OK? Abandoned, injured and alone sad

Welshwife Mon 28-Mar-16 22:32:41

A few episodes earlier Roper had told Pine he only had the boy for a couple of weeks in the holidays. The child's mother was the woman he got to watch Jed - under threat of not seeing him again if she did not comply.

rosesarered Mon 28-Mar-16 22:06:28

The last two episodes were cracking, edge of seat stuff all the way.Even DH stayed awake ( no greater compliment to a film or programme.)
Had forgotten about Roper's little boy, but think early on it was said that he spent some time with Mother and some with Father.
Not sure who organised the switch from police to scary arms dealers, but likely to be scary arms dealers themselves?

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 28-Mar-16 21:52:15

What will happen to Roper's little boy now that the bad men have got his dad? Why did the police let the bad men take Roper? Will Angela get back to the UK before she has the baby? Will 'Pine' have to go back to his "half life"?

Was all a bit worrying in the end?

Shelagh6 Mon 28-Mar-16 20:22:52

Ma ie - you are thinking of 'The Night Porter' - quite different film and quite different subject!

Jalima Mon 28-Mar-16 19:01:37

I think Jed was shocked to find herself a mother at 17, unable to care for her child but loved him enough to want to support him. She probably fell for the 'sugar daddy' but realised that he was not the benign, charity-supporting businessman that he appeared to be.
The accent was good too (she is Australian)
Think he would make a great Bond. Who, Leticia - Hugh Laurie? grin
(Yes, yes)

Yes, the book was different but I was pleased with the ending of the tv series (a relief).
I did notice the non-squelching shoes etc hmm

Penstemmon Mon 28-Mar-16 17:18:04

Book is different to the TV show, characters and ending. No spoilers!

Elsie10 Mon 28-Mar-16 17:04:00

Brilliant series - I was hooked to the last. Think I might even give the book a go although have never read anything by Le Carre before.

Leticia Mon 28-Mar-16 16:45:02

I loved it, even though I watched a lot of the last episode behind a cushion.
BBC at its best.
I think that Jed had just got out of her depth.
I assumed that he had time to change his clothes after the pool.
Think he would make a great Bond.

Strugglinabit Mon 28-Mar-16 16:30:37

Was a bit baffled by Jed's character. I had been convinced she was some agent or other.... leaving her young child to become a courtesan, was that just a whim? - and why did Pyne find that scenario such an attraction - does he just have a penchant for mistresses already attached to someone else?
I didn't expect it to be in Austen mode, but am getting a bit fed up with amoral coupling and storylines in every TV plot!

oldie730 Mon 28-Mar-16 13:55:25

Best series along with Happy Valley. All actors amazing, star of show for me was Jed. Now Hugh Laurie is "more mature" hope he continues with this sort of role. Pine for James Bond - never!!??

LullyDully Mon 28-Mar-16 13:05:42

Perhaps he Is the real baby's father as they were married once in Rev.

NanSue Mon 28-Mar-16 12:08:40

I was gripped from the first episode until the very last. Disappointed it's all over. Sunday evenings won't be the same. Like charleygirl I too noticed immediately how dry Pine was after the pool incident!

hulahoop Mon 28-Mar-16 11:57:16

Really enjoyed it isn't pine gorgeous he would make a good James Bond I thought acting was very good thought he'd was very graceful oh to be like that there were parts when I couldn't look last night !

Charleygirl Mon 28-Mar-16 11:52:49

I did notice that he was very wet after he jumped into the pool but within 5 minutes of arriving at the hotel, shoes no longer squelchy and suit as dry as a bone. An oversight methinks.

littlegran Mon 28-Mar-16 11:36:39

Disappointed

tanith Mon 28-Mar-16 10:59:46

Really enjoyed it and a great ending ..

Carolebarrel Mon 28-Mar-16 10:55:33

Great - very tense. trying to decide whether the clandestine lovers will ever meet again. don't think so somehow sad

appygran Mon 28-Mar-16 10:46:15

Loved it and so sad it has ended. What am I going to do on Sunday evenings now. John Le Carre is such a clever writer and his novels adapt for screen and television brilliantly imo.

scrapgran Mon 28-Mar-16 10:27:23

Brilliant serial - best thing on TV for ages and so well acted
