Any opinions on first episode?

whitewave Mon 14-Mar-16 20:56:35

Didn't realise it was Le Carre - also the lady who is pregnant really is pregnant according to my mother!

Floradora9 Mon 14-Mar-16 19:49:20

did you notice John Le Care in this week's episode I quote from the Telegraph website where you can see the clip . We recognised him .

If you weren't too wrapped in the rising tension of BBC's The Night Manager adaptation, and Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston)'s slow seduction into the deadly yet alluring lifestyle of the criminal billionaire; you may have noticed a small surprise tucked into its running time.

One of its most uncomfortably tense moments saw Corky (Tom Hollander) suffer a complete meltdown in the middle of a restaurant, punching a waiter and simulating fellatio on Pine; even declaring boss Roper (Hugh Laurie) "the blind man who cannot see the human bloody hand grenade in front of his bloody eyes."

Pretty eventful; which is perhaps how you may have missed a cameo from The Night Manager's own author John le Carré, who Pine himself must apologise to about the utter chaos caused by Corky.

Le Carré had previously commended the liberties taken with the BBC's modern adaptation of his 1993 novel. "By now I am simply part of the audience, because this isn’t the film of the book, it’s the film of the film, which is what we all pray for," he stated.

"And it seems to me that this time round we may really have got it: film doing its own job, opening up my novel in ways I didn’t think anyone had noticed – and maybe I hadn’t noticed them."

Yes, it was Apostol (the one whose daughter died in a previous episode I think)

whitewave Sun 13-Mar-16 22:16:09

Just know its all going to end in tears. Just like in real life the baddies will never get caught.

Charleygirl Sun 13-Mar-16 22:07:29

Perhaps the Spanish lawyer and girlfriend? Nobody could contact him telling him to flee the country because he was already dead.

tanith Sun 13-Mar-16 22:05:10

I think that was the 'Spanish Lawyer' they were talking about earlier. It was very good you'd think he'd have more sense than to get involved with the girlfriend she's going to come to a 'sticky' end at some point no doubt.

Marelli Sun 13-Mar-16 22:02:17

Ooh - that was good! Anyone know who the bloodied couple were in the last scene, though? confused

Jalima Tue 08-Mar-16 19:50:54

That would be a twist in the tale shock
No, he's just a nasty arms dealer who will sell to any side. Perhaps he'll get caught in the crossfire.

Is the girlfriend just trying to find out something so that she has a hold on him, or is she an agent? (probably not, too weepy.)

How can Olivia Coleman charge around that pregnant in that heat? And I thought you weren't allowed to fly in the 1st or 3rd trimester? She certainly looks as if she is in the 3rd.

POGS Tue 08-Mar-16 19:45:41

Jingle

I think I know what you mean confused

Is Roper a double Agent??

Jalima Tue 08-Mar-16 17:55:24

No, but I do like Hugh Laurie grin

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 08-Mar-16 17:22:54

Isn't anyone else finding themselves actually liking Roper? Just a little bit?

lundylinda Tue 08-Mar-16 17:17:40

We too are enjoying this. The locations are super. On Sunday the family treated me to a day out at Hartland Abbey. The Devon cottage that featured in episode two is part of the Estate, we were able to get a few snaps there with the grandchildren. The owners told us that when the crew did the scenes in Hartland village they didn't have to change a thing in the shop - that's just how it is. A real step back in time.

Article today suggested that The night manager - don't know his name - could be the next James Bond.
I thought last night that he would be a good choice!

Oh dear, poor Tom Hollander, I'm sure he lovely in RL (well, he was as a vicar but that was acting too).

Greyduster Mon 07-Mar-16 12:07:26

Or, not so!

Greyduster Mon 07-Mar-16 12:06:44

Very exciting last night! I lay in bed wondering what horrendous end is in store for Corky! Roper will set the heavies on him so it's bound to be horrendous isn't it ?? So will he be ordered to take his advice to Quinn and fill his pocket with stones and walk into the sea???

J52 Mon 07-Mar-16 11:40:23

Tom Hollander's character is obviously for the chop? I wonder how gruesome his demise will be. Great drama!

ninathenana Mon 07-Mar-16 11:36:27

Interesting to see Hollander being all menacing in this then turn over to +1 and watch him as Dr ? in the new period drama.

whitewave Mon 07-Mar-16 11:30:39

Cor blimey this gets better and better! The tension is being ratcheted up and up. Article today suggested that The night manager - don't know his name - could be the next James Bond.

POGS Wed 02-Mar-16 23:39:03

Oh eck, I thought it was good. I am definitely going to follow it through.

Indinana Tue 01-Mar-16 21:06:33

It wasn't the violence specifically that has put me off, though I can't say I like watching violence on TV. It was more the general sinisterness of the thing.

Perhaps I'm going soft in my old age, but I watch television to be entertained, not scared out of my wits at the thought of this level of evil and power, the thought that it could be (sorry, is) going on right now around the world. Enough of that in the news.

So no, I'm afraid I won't be watching any more of this.

rosesarered Tue 01-Mar-16 16:20:09

I didn't think the violence was that bad! am enjoying the series so far, yes a bit far fetched it's true, but well acted by all.

ninathenana Tue 01-Mar-16 09:25:24

Thank you jalima I've been trying to think where I'd seen Tom Hollander grin
DH and I both loved Rev

f77ms Tue 01-Mar-16 08:27:11

Watched the 1st one last night , I couldn`t get into it at all so won`t be watching anymore .

mollie Tue 01-Mar-16 07:49:10

The level of violence did it for me - don't think I'll be watching any more. I much prefer psychological thrillers these days. Spent the rest of the evening debating (with myself) the rights and wrongs of turning someone into a violent thug to catch another violent thug.

Eloethan Tue 01-Mar-16 01:14:00

I didn't enjoy the second episode much. I found it hard to relate to the "Night Manager" when he showed himself capable of such violence, even though it was for a "good cause". I also found it very far fetched.

I'll stick with it for the time being but don't think it has the subtlety or class of the old Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy/Alec Guinness stuff.

I agree about Tom Hollander - he was truly menacing.
