Has anyone watched this? I find some of the sweeping statements being made a bit unreal. For example- "Everyone went to church on a Sunday". Was I the only little heathen who only went occasionally, dropped out of Sunday school (realise now Mum and dad so wanted us out the house for a bit) and usually went to visit gran who was a lapsed Catholic and wouldn't go near a priest. And "Women didn't work outside the home" Middle class women maybe, my mum and both grans had part-time jobs. As for "Shops didn't open on Sundays", sorry, from 1958 we had a corner shop and we opened on Sundays . Not all day and we were restricted in what we were allowed to sell, but we opened!

Gettingonabit- I wonder if that phone box had the authentic fags and pee smell?

Does anyone remember Quatermass and the Pit 1958? on the BBC tv? I watched it with DF, I wasn't very old (just a teenager) and it was very scary!
Roast dinners on Sunday and for Sunday tea tinned luncheon meat or tinned ham and salad from the garden with Heinz salad cream, bread and butter, tinned peaches and evaporated milk and a home-made cake.

Net petticoats were popular in about 1958 or 9 I think, I used to soak mine in sugar water in the bath.

Phone boxes - yes, smelt of fags and pee (yuck) and a call was 4d in old money!

I was 12 when Quatermass and the Pit was on. I was so furious because I had to miss an episode to go to a pantomime with the Girl Guides. It was probably that that put me off the Guides for ever grin Still we've got a DVD of now, which we play about once a year (when we've got 3 hours to spare) so that's all good!

I finally got a proper net petticoat just before they went out of fashion - story of my life.

I was terrified of Quatermass and the Pit. And I remember those net petticoats, mine wasn't as full skirted or frilly as I wanted and all my friends seemed to have. It just didn't stick out enough. I think my mum probably thought they were common and was trying to get me something more lady-like.
