Jericho: A Yorkshire western

J52 the drunk manager in the office said there was a vacant hut and if she could make it a going concern as a lodging house he would delay the rent on it for a while. (I think this is what happened). We have a large viaduct near us and it was interesting to see the methods they were using for building it.

That's what fascinated me. I know lots of shanty towns grew up at that time and many people died building these places but I'd never likened it to 'the wild west' before. Her clothes and immaculate hair annoyed me at first [plus the usual need to include a 'love interest'] but, in a lot of ways, it had far more of a gritty reality than most costume dramas.

I couldn't even start - too Catherine Cookson for me I need cheering up in January not this stuff.

Looking forward to next week`s episode, decent TV dramas are too few and far between.

I'd recorded it and looked forward to watching it. I only lasted for about the first 40 minutes. I just didn't like it. I found I didn't care about the characters and switched off. I was disappointed.

Never mind Jericho, which incidentally I'm enjoying. I just love your gorgeous whippet Tegan. I've wanted one for years but fear it would be too energetic for me.

I've decided that life is too short and DH has slept through both episodes he tried to watch.

Hannah; believe me, all they want to do is sleep. If you let them off the lead they'll do 30 mph from a standing start but on the lead they walk beautifully. In the house, once they've ran round the walls a couple of times [and that's only when they're young] they're straight on the sofa [gave up trying to keep her off the sofa] and don't move. I used to have spaniels that were on the go morning till night; whippets are far more relaxing. But they will wreck your garden [Hattie has her own bit of the garden, fenced off from the rest]. kitty; I fear that Jericho is getting just daft now. I did have hopes for it but the storyline is just too cliche'd. And, yes, the wigs are awful...

Stop it now with the Catherine Cookson and When the Boat Comes In analogies. It's in the Yorkshire Dales, about 100 miles from the 15 streets. It'd tek aboot a day to get yoursel' yon bi 'oss and cart, bonnie lasses.

Thank you Tegan. I am tempted but I also love my garden. For now I'll admire them from afar.

It's almost at the 'so bad it's good' stage, isn't it! You know, I don't think I've ever seen When the Boat Comes In [although I 'feel' as though I've seen it].

When The Boat Comes In was really good! One of the best of it's time.

Jericho is about building the Ribblehead Viaduct on the Settle to Carlisle railway. Hundreds of navvies lost their lives building it in the 1870s.
There were other settlements called Inkermann, Sebastapol, Belgravia and even Salt Lake City, all within half an hour's wade through the bogs. The navvies were housed three or four hundred to a settlement.

If you can get hold of a copy of the Dalesman, there is an article about the real Jericho, and about how they lived and died.

We`re still enjoying Jericho. Where we used to live in Lancashire, I often saw Jericho on the destination board on buses going to Bury, but never actually found out where it was, so there was obviousy more than one.
