The John Lewis Christmas ad is here m.youtube.com/watch?v=wuz2ILq4UeA
A beautiful version of one of my favourite songs.

I don't care about adverts but my new Belling cooker from JL is rubbish and I'm very disappointed.

JamJar1 Sat 07-Nov-15 09:37:17

I don't think this ad is one of their best and didn't watch This Morning annemac but I thought, just my opinion, it was made quite clear he was the man in the moon rather than a grandparent. And at the end the message on the bottom of the screen is reach out to someone at Christmas. Where it seems to have come unstuck is where GC have been told by their parents their much missed Grandad or Grandma is now on a star, on the moon.
I think they also played it safe with the little girl befriending the man on the moon because of the near hysteria at times, sadly. An elderly person sitting on a park bench near a children's playground being asked to move was one story I'd read recently, admittedly it was I think in the Daily Mail who love to sensationalise, but smiling at a child on a bus, a train, completely innocent behaviour can be unwelcome nowadays.

I won't be watching it again if I can help it. It's just so sad, yes I'm crying.

I agree with most people, that when all the gaiety has disappeared and everyone has gone back to living their lives, he is still a lonely old man.

I think it's more a call to communicate with your lonely relatives NOT JUST at Christmas but all year.

Think the ad is awful. Trying to make people feel guilty to make them spend money in John Lewis

LizRhodes Sat 07-Nov-15 09:12:17

Sorry, but I wasn't at all impressed. It gives the message that he's a dear old man half a world away and it's OK to be mawkish and send him beautifully wrapped presents, but at the end, he's still alone. Plus the fact that it cost £7 million to make - just think what could be done with that to alleviate poverty, disease, homelessness, etc. OK, I know it's not going to happen, but the whole thing just seems all wrong. Is John Lewis trying to hijack Christmas?

I too thought he was the man on the moon and didn't realize he was a grandparent until they analyzed it on This Morning. I would imagine that some grandparents will feel that they may as well live on the moon if they are by themselves at Christmas. I prefer happier adverts but if it makes even one family think about elderly relatives at Christmas then it's a good thing.

If it highlights the plight of old people being lonely at Christmas, or at any time of the year, it has served a purpose.

Personally, I think I would prefer to see something more joyful at this time of the year, maybe a lonely elderly person being welcomed into a family at Christmas and having a happy time with them. It's more inclusive that way.

I was just delighted to see a girl using a telescope and hope little girls everywhere will want to do the same!

I found myself welling up as I watched it, which I suppose is what the people who made it were aiming for. I can't get wound up about commercialism at Christmas because it's so much embedded into the Christmas experience now. The message I took from the advertisement was that children are imaginative, elderly isolated people can feel lonely and that kindness, friendliness and caring can go hand in hand with commercialism.
Yours sincerely

Sorry, didn't notice there were two threads on this. Not paying attention. Copied over:-

Nope, sorry, don't like it. Too many questions kept popping into my head like where's his veggie patch, dog, children? Is she his granddaughter and the parents dumped him there because he was so horrible? How does he pick her out from the whole world zooming round? How did the balloons manage to float there?

If it hadn't been advertised as the John Lewis ad I'd never have noticed .... Or paid much attention to it.

gillybob Sat 07-Nov-15 00:42:30

.....and considering that the advert was deliberately designed (Age concern) to help make "people" consider that their older relatives might want someone to care about them at Xmas.... I think it smacks a very good message.

gillybob Sat 07-Nov-15 00:38:05

We'll, I think it's lovely. Aaaaahhhhhhh smile

Maggiemaybe Fri 06-Nov-15 23:52:57

No, I don't like this at all sad And I'm usually a sucker for the John Lewis ads. This one just seems cruel.

Elrel Fri 06-Nov-15 23:08:00

Sentiment is ok but actual ad weird, bizarre. If it prompts someone to extend a friendly hand to a lonely person, good, but will it?

ajanela Fri 06-Nov-15 22:50:43

Not impressed. Using loneliness as a marketing tool.

Ana Fri 06-Nov-15 21:38:35

I preferred the Snowman one - but anything's better than this...

rosesarered Fri 06-Nov-15 21:35:16

Bring back the penguin!

Ana Fri 06-Nov-15 21:31:27

I've just seen it - I think it's awful, absolutely awful!

Lost for words.

bikergran Fri 06-Nov-15 20:05:45

Didn't realise there was another thread so will post again here.

The add made me cry, I won't be watching it again...and I just hope that my GS doesn't see it, he even has a resemblance to my dh sad it's very sad and to me a thoughtless add.

We all know how children's minds work and I can imagine lots of children asking for telescopes thinking that they may see granddad again whom they think has gone to heaven(yes I know it shows the moon but little ones will no doubt think its heaven with a little house that granddad lives in)

Children watch these adds, it the same when they show moving lego/dolls/spaceships. jumping about and moving themselves, making the toys look like they are animated, when we as adults know they are static.

I think the add has so many uncomfortable meanings, those of us who have lost family members and friends, those who cannot see their families for what ever reason...it is a very tasteless add.

Lona Fri 06-Nov-15 19:53:41

I think it's horrible! I'd much rather see amusing ads that make you laugh. More chance of people buying their stuff then.
IMO.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 06-Nov-15 19:16:44

Where is Thatbags when you need her? hmm She knows how to tweet.

Ana Fri 06-Nov-15 19:06:03

You could always start a petition, jingl. Apparently they're all the rage...grin

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 06-Nov-15 18:59:11

We could bring John Lewis down! Make 'em grovel for forgiveness.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 06-Nov-15 18:58:22

The very idea that a present and a bunch of balloons could make it right for that poor old boy! hmm

Getting angry now.

How do you tweet people? (I only read other people's tweets)

Claudiaclaws Fri 06-Nov-15 18:48:02

No! Sorry it doesn't do it for me. The music is quite nice. But compared to last year it doesn't compare.
