He's just like I imagined him to be - Uhtred.

Anyone else watched?

harrigran Sun 13-Dec-15 19:40:31

I wasn't expecting to enjoy it, thought it might be a bit macho, but loved it.

Tegan Sun 13-Dec-15 19:39:37

I'll watch the last episode again. I've really, really enjoyed it smile. King Alfred was a brilliant bit of casting; he's such a good actor.

chelseababy Sun 13-Dec-15 19:27:09

Just watched end again, my heartthrob was Leofric. Uthred was riding north where his sister is held captive to"blood feuds and revenge" He rode off with the nun and the soldier on the horse who was next to him at the baptism of Earl Guthrum. Not sure who he was!

Tegan Sun 13-Dec-15 18:42:44

Me too chelseababy...blush.. who did he set off with? I know the nun was with him but there was someone else. I did have to rewatch the first two episodes to work out who was who, but glad I did now. Has he got to go and find his sister now? [think I need to rewatch the last episode again]

chelseababy Sun 13-Dec-15 13:28:14

Caught up with this yesterday. Wasn't sure I'd stick with it after the first episode but glad I did. Shame his sidekick Leowith (?) is dead, rather liked him!

Tegan Thu 10-Dec-15 23:09:56

If this works this is where he's heading.....

Last episode tonight [hope there's another series]. Even drove past a place in Northumberland the other day called 'Brida', and kept imagining all the battles that took place in the area. I understand another Cornwell book is going to be serialised [not by the BBC though]. I am so enjoying this, although Detectorists is no longer on BBC4 straight afterwards [which used to be an antidote to the violence, in the same way that it did when Peaky Blinders was on].

The Wonderful Man was conceived in Norway, lived in Norway for a year, speaks and reads the Norwegian language and he has lots of friends from all three Scandinavian countries who definitely consider him to be a Viking. He also had red hair when he was younger and his mother has Dupuytren's disease - tradition has it that the disease originated with the Vikings! Oh yes, and he's a Bernard Cornwell fan.

So, yes - we're watching on iPlayer - although the WM can't stand the blood and gore and does a lot of looking away and wincing! grin

Nonny Thu 05-Nov-15 21:36:59

I have been reading this series over the summer and have enjoyed them. We were away and I missed the first episode but I have decided not to catch up. Like mollie I prefer to keep the characters as I imagine them.
I wonder what TV would do to Shardlake?!!

tanith Thu 05-Nov-15 20:52:48

I'm looking forwards to it too trouble is we're also watching 'Unforgiven' so I'll catch up with 'Last Kingdom' tomorrow.

Tegan Thu 05-Nov-15 19:53:11

Having found the characters very confusing [doesn't help that I always seem to fall asleep before a programme ends] I watched both episodes today to work out who was who and I'm now enjoying it enormously. There's a lot of humour in it. Really looking forward to tonights episode.

The telegraph...the link won't work [can't do links sad...

Tegan Fri 23-Oct-15 13:03:32

It was in one of the papers last week mollie; thought I'd kept the article but can't find it [usually keep everything].

LullyDully Fri 23-Oct-15 12:53:54

Oh we enjoyed that. Another great Scandinavian Noire. I haven't read the books yet. Prefer it to G of T which got so confusing.....Prefer the books of that.

It bugged me where I had seen the boy before.( I expect you are all not as daft as me. ) He was the son in Dr Foster.

mollie Fri 23-Oct-15 12:40:38

Jingle, it's the voices too (or is that just me??)

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 23-Oct-15 12:26:42

I know what you mean mollie. about keeping your own pictures of characters in your head. smile

mollie Fri 23-Oct-15 12:23:59

Jingle: very glad it's close to the original story, so many of them aren't. The recent Phil Rickman/Merrily Watkins story was a total re-write and disappointing. Still not sure I want to see the dramatisation, I've got the characters in my head and I can remember how disappointed I felt when they turned Fred Bassett into a TV cartoon and he was sooooo different from how I imagined him grin. I think I'll leave my dreams intact.

Old Bernard Cornwell (bless him) believes he's related to Uhtred I read somewhere. Not sure how he can be sure but I don't blame him. If you need a role model for an ancestor why not have one with some fighting spirit.

Tegan Fri 23-Oct-15 11:46:19

Oops, not a Viking but a Saxon; Eider the Flamebearer..

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 23-Oct-15 11:43:09

merlot grin

Tegan Fri 23-Oct-15 11:41:45

They were never going to have the budget that HBO productions have so it took me a while to not feel a bit disappointed in the quality of it, but it's a period of time that I know little about even though I spend so much time in areas where the Vikings raided on a regular basis. One of Cornwells ancestors was a Viking Raider.

Greyduster Fri 23-Oct-15 10:58:57

I was really looking forward to this and DH put it on tape because we've been watching that detective thing on the other side, which he hasn't been taping. So he will go in fear of his life if I don't get to watch it tonight!! I forgot until recently that I had read a couple of the books - thought the name Uhtred seemed familiar! The books were pretty gory too.

Grannyknot Fri 23-Oct-15 10:57:36

It's not nearly as good (nor as gory) as Vikings which was on the History channel earlier this year. Meet Radnar Lodbrok, Skandi style:

merlotgran Fri 23-Oct-15 10:07:51

Is he hunky, jingl?

Er......Um......I'm scratching my head.....Let me think about that one grin

He'd happily grow a big bushy ginger beard if I'd let him but I dread to think what would be lurking in there.

He's also very good at storming around with a cross face waving an axe but all I have to do is point him in the direction of a heap of logs.....Sorted!!

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 23-Oct-15 09:54:30

I've got the last boxset of of GOT whitewave. Gave up watching it though. I just couldn't follow it. Too many people.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 23-Oct-15 09:53:01

mollie They've got it right. You can watch.

Tegan, yes 'Bebbanburgh' they call it - probably the old name. I've always liked trying to work out the present day names from the old names in the books. What is it for York? Eoforwic?

merlot envy Is he hunky?
