A good episode tonight. Poor old Lordy. Those Downton women are so thin that I cannot eat my tube of Smarties while I'm watching them as they make me feel guilty.

What about Marigold? (Do wish they had named her something different, whenever she is mentioned I wonder why they are talking about rubber gloves)
What will Lady Mary do when she discovers the truth?

rosequartz Mon 19-Oct-15 10:25:21

She can't say much, she is no saint herself. But she probably will!
I think it's quite pretty, never thought of the gloves grin
When I was very young I had a friend called Marie and her surname was Gould.

Is that really what happens when an ulcer bursts? Good grief. I'm glad I haven't got one... as far as I know.

Anniebach Mon 19-Oct-15 10:41:56

Rosequartz, I use to read that list during the sermon and work out who couldn't marry in my own family

I think there is definitely simmering going on between Lady Mary and the sainted Sybil's widower - can't recall his name, but I don't do names well

I once worked for a 'luxury' brand and met many women who live this kind of lifestyle. Without exception they are all incredibly thin.

Butlers made money on the side by selling alcohol on I believe, which is why some housekeepers/butlers went on to buy hotels in later life as they'd put so much money on one side.

Enjoyed reading all the posts, haven't seen this episode yet, but that's ok, we have had enough clues about an ulcer coming on.Does it explode in a spectacular fashion, a bit like in Aliens?
I'm also glad others mentioned Lady Mary's voice, as each series has gone on her voice has become posher, icier, more regal.Wonder if this is intentional? It may be so, as then when she falls in love with somebody, she can then show a warm breathy way of speaking ( or just natural) so we will know that she's happy.
I can't wait to see Carson complain about the chops!Of course, he did want
A 'full marriage' and knowing how to cook a chop falls into that heading.

ninathenana Mon 19-Oct-15 11:13:52

Had to laugh when Mary said to Sibyls' widower "I don't mean to sound snobby but I could never marry beneath me" oxymoron!

Bellanonna Mon 19-Oct-15 11:26:18

Oh Lona I couldn't stop laughing. Still am

Indinana Mon 19-Oct-15 12:56:19

I expect Lady M will find out the truth about Marigold, and most likely use it against Edith - possibly to put a spanner in the works of the budding romance between Edith and that fellow last night (can't remember his name). I don't think Lady M would be able to bear her 'plain and unmarriageable' sister getting any limelight, even if it isn't a 'good match' to someone who is wealthy and well connected.
And I don't think being 'no saint herself' would stop her - after all, does Edith have any clue about her sister's shocking private life?

rosequartz Mon 19-Oct-15 13:10:59

Rosequartz, I use to read that list during the sermon
*anniebach8 Yes, it help many a boring sermon half hour pass by when I was young grin

rosequartz Mon 19-Oct-15 13:12:42

Of course, he did want A 'full marriage' and knowing how to cook a chop falls into that heading. rosesarered lol

NotTooOld Mon 19-Oct-15 13:42:29

Anniebach - Lady Mary - knickers -- ha ha ha! grin

rosesarered Tue 20-Oct-15 11:46:30

Having watched last Sunday's episode now, yes the ulcer was explosive stuff! Gaaaaah!
Glad he will survive though, he's a stuffy old thing, but undeniably nice. The opposite of his Mother though, imagine a MIL like that!
Anna looks thinner and more ill in every episode, this can't bode well....

J52 Tue 20-Oct-15 12:26:14

Just a thought - they seem to drink a lot. 3 different glasses at lunch, before and during dinner, Maggie Smith sipping sherry with almost every visitor.

No wonder his Lordship had an ulcer! grin

I'm wondering if Michael(?) Marigold's father will re-appear in the Christmas special?

Did they have proof that he was killed by the brownshirts?

Lynker Tue 20-Oct-15 13:54:27

Can someone please tell me about this Marigold, who she is and where she fits in with Lady Mary? I have missed some episodes and seem to be missing something here.....I remember LM's husband being killed in a car accident, is Marigold his child?

Indinana Tue 20-Oct-15 13:56:05

That is something I mentioned on another thread a while back, merlot - that my fantasy is that Michael comes back from the dead, and Edith can finally claim Marigold publicly as her own. It would have the added bonus, of course, of properly putting Lady M's nose right out of joint grin

NotTooOld Tue 20-Oct-15 14:07:33

Lynker - Marigold is the child of whatshername (the one that now runs a magazine) and her former lover, Michael, who disappeared in mysterious circumstances in Germany. Whatsername (the mag woman) had the baby (Marigold) secretly and then boarded her out with one of the peasants. However, not sure why now, the baby went to live at DA but Lady Mary does not know the baby belongs to Whatsername (her sister - the mag woman) although she obviously now has her suspicions.

Hope that is clear to you. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong!

No, I don't think there was any proof that Michael was actually dead, so perhaps he will return at Christmas.

I've only just realised why Lady M is so against racing cars - silly me. I think she might realise that whatisname (widower of Lady Sybil - I'm terrible at names) is a good bloke and decide to marry him. I think that's why she made that remark about 'I will not marry down' - it was a red herring. What a terrible snob she is, though. Must be fun to act that part.

Lona Tue 20-Oct-15 14:31:32

No, please don't let Lady Mary get the ex chauffeur, I want him all to myself.

Lynker Tue 20-Oct-15 14:38:29

Oh thank you NoTooOld.....that makes sense, but if Marigold is now living at DA, who does LM think she belongs to? and does the other sister (is she Lady Edith?) ignore her own daughter? I should pay more attention, but we spend time overseas and I miss more than I see.... but I love it (especially LM).

Ana Tue 20-Oct-15 15:25:30

No, she doesn't ignore her, Marigold's supposed to be her 'ward' and gets treated like the rest of the DA children (i.e. played with at set times and not in front of the servants! wink).

Has anyone else noticed that Tom the former chauffeur seems to have put on quite a bit of weight during his time away...?

merlotgran Tue 20-Oct-15 15:29:56

Marigold is Lady Edith's (aka whatsername) ward - as far as those not in the know (Lady Mary for one) are concerned.

It was assumed that poor 'on the shelf' Edith would never have a child of her own so nobody minded when she nicked one from the Drews (tenant farmers but peasants really) only Marigold wasn't their child at all. She was dumped on them by Lady Edith who had smuggled her back from Switzerland or France or somewhere where she'd gone to have her so nobody would know she was up the duff by Michael.

Edith is dotty about Marigold but luckily her family is so dense it took ages for the penny to drop so only a few know who her real mother is which makes it even more daft.

Mary is just plain thick.

Lynker Tue 20-Oct-15 16:16:17

Oh crikey....no wonder I'm confused!! I had no idea.... what a tangled web!!!! Thank you for your help ladies... can't wait for Sunday!

NotTooOld Tue 20-Oct-15 16:28:41

merlotgran - you make me laugh.

Do you think the Carsons will end up divorced by Christmas? That room they eat in, is that the cottage they bought (didn't they?) or is it a room downstairs at DA? I'm confused. Also, will we ever find out how things are for them in the bedroom department?
